Neuqua Valley starts the season as the #1 team in Illinois
I knew this day would come but still...
The early morning chill and dew could not put a damper on a day meant for cross country. Detweiller Park in Peoria featured three championship races: 1A, 2A, 3A. All events coincided with the girls each hour, which makes for a festive but exhaustive day.
Every state in the Union can brag about their best team or set of best teams. That is a given and a nature birth right to do so. However, when it comes to boys cross country, it would be incredibly hard to argue against the West Suburban Conference (Silver Division) not being the premier league in Illinois.
The last several years at the top of the 3A food chain has seen Hinsdale Central (enjoying the spoils of victory above last year) eating mighty good. The Red Devils fought off their key would be hunter in Orland Park (Sandburg) in earning a second consecutive state championship.
As quiet as it was in January on the home front and all of the indoor track and field talk coming out of the east coast, now things have shifted.
The distance events (including the 4x8 relay) is going to another pressure cooker this season. Count on it!
Throughout the 2014 cross country season, as weekly national rankings were published and dominated by east and west coast teams, those of us in Illinois knew the team depth in the Prairie state was being grossly overlooked...
NXN Midwest & Northwest, Ostrander races for first time since early October, suprise Michiganders go big!
Indiana has always shown love to its guests when it comes to sports. Cross Country over the years has been a big beneficiary in that department. It started with the AAU, TAC, and USATF post-season regional and national meets for the tots, leading all the way up to the NCAA national championships and the professional ranks. Nike Cross Nationals got in on the action in 2007 and has never looked back.
State week! Historic Detweiller Park in Peoria has held a special place in my heart ever since I first ran there my sophomore year during the season but I don’t think I’m the only person in Illinois who feels that way. I’ve been to the state meet both as part of a qualifying team and to watch individuals from our school, and it is hard to parallel the excitement and energy at the park.
Every state championship seems to bring out the best in Illinois runners. Could it be that historic Detweiller is the reason? Perhaps it is to an extent, but the real reason has to be better coaching of girls for the three-mile distance. Two seasons ago Madeline Perez of Glenbard West set the all-time record of 16:02. That performance and the other 86 girls who broke 18:00 confirmed the fact that girls can indeed run the same distance as boys with relevance and respect. This year times are fast and we all should see some wonderful team and individual performances on Saturday afternoon
Let’s ditch the pronouncements such as “Sectional of death” or this is “the most anticipated meet in the state” and simply call the Niles West Sectional a cross country meet to watch.
In the NCAA ranks, this will be the first weekend that invitationals will count toward their "countable season". The countable season basically means results will count toward at-large consideration into the NCAA Championships. The IHSA does not have this (perhaps they should and that is a discussion for another day)...
his is the reason that the commonly phased Peoria Notre Dame Invitational or PND will be officially referred as the Richard Spring Memorial Invitational on paper: “Richard Spring, a 1981 graduate of Bergan High School in Peoria, ran cross-country, the mile, and the two-mile. Participating on two state championship teams, Richard personally finished third in the single-class IHSA state tournament in his senior year. Richard died running at Augustana College in 1982.”
"There are so many good teams but not enough time"- a wise quote from a high school historian who proclaimed that when a sport is good there is not enough time to really enjoy it. The upcoming boys large classification may fit that bill. A new star was born last year when Hinsdale Central joined the elite class and won their first state championship going away. This year it should be another great cast of scenarios for us all to follow and enjoy.... strap it up and make the time!

The 46th Annual Prospect Wanner Knights Invitational entered the track world scene with tremendous hype amid the pending so-so weather forecasts. Mother Nature promised all of the faithful who trekked to Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect Friday evening that she would do her best in presenting decent climes. If she kept her word the boys of spring would take over and do their best to not disappoint the track and field aficionados.
The meet of the year indoors or outside for the boys in the state of Illinois is finally here with everybody’s favorite the 46th Annual Prospect Wanner Knights Invitational Preview. Mother nature has indicated that she will cooperate and bring in solid climes in the middle 50s and with moderate winds. If she keeps her word, then the faithful should see a wonderful meet and one of the best of the year.

The Illinois indoor season is finally in full swing as all parts of the state will be hosting key meets from now until the Monday if you count that day as part of the weekend extravaganza. Take a look at the key weekend action from around the state (editor note: additional info may be added Friday evening and night to preview).
Traditionally, the third weekend of the February is considered “The Super Weekend” of track and field in Illinois because it’s when teams really get to strut their stuff for the first time. So it should not be a surprise to hear coaches saying their athletes have been scratching and kicking on the barn doors all winter in anticipation of competing in some top notch invitationals.
The 49th Annual Proviso West Boys track meet has a few names that fans go by. One is the Proviso West Boys Invitational, Proviso West Boys Indoor Classic, or the Proviso West Boys 16-team Invite. Whatever you wish to call to the meet it should be a good, quality meet if not great.
This season will carry many hopes and dreams for teams and their fans who love relays. It allows the whole team to feel that sense of team and” family.” There will be opportunities for the traditionally strong squads as well as emerging units to move in and earn their place in IHSA annals. The premier of all relays in Illinois is the 4x800m relay. This video called the “Boys 4x800 Premier Event” proves that fact.
The best runners from across the midwest head to Terre Haute, Indiana, the sie of the NXN Midwest Regional. Teams and individuals alike are looking to punch their tickets to Nike Nationals in Portland, Oregon. Our Tony Jones will be on-site for MileSplit Illinois and will have photos, videos, and a recap of all the action.
It was just several years ago that the Mid-Suburban League (MSL) had a strong hold on as the state’s best combined cross country conference. It was then that Palatine was the anchor team that ruled boys and girls high school running. Barrington, Mt. Prospect (Prospect), and Hoffman Estates are other strong examples.
The most anticipated team race in recent memory will take place two hours past noon at the wildly popular Detweiller Park. Will the 28-time champion York bring back another title to Elmhurst? Or will some bandit team come out of nowhere and surprise the masses. Stay tuned and find out about 2:45pm on Saturday.
The weather cooperated long enough for the competition to exercise their demons on a new course on the grounds of Lake Park High School’s east campus. The Lancer staff and community finally got their opportunity to host a sectional championship after putting in bids for years. They responded with an awesome presentation and display. Kudos!

Our MileSplit database is an incredibly powerful tool. Not only can you rank individuals and teams, by class, region, grade, etc, but we can also see how those runners who might not get as much limelight, the junior varsity squads look. We wanted to see who the top teams would be scoring the #8- #14 runners. and this is what we came up with! This also gives you an indication of the depth some teams have waiting in the wings.
Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) rolled again this weekend to retain their perch atop the rankings and add to their legend, by winning with 90 points and a course record 12:44.34 team average. But that's not all!!

Historical Detweiller Park in Peoria was used as the backdrop on an absolutely gorgeous day to run a cross country meet (and race for that matter) that officially ushered out the summer solstice and into the second half of the season.
The summer is really like spring for cross country enthusiasts who had to wait all winter and spring for their time of the year to talk up their sport. All over the Midwest coaches, athletes, parents, and fans get excited about the prospects of the coming fall and what to expect. In Illinois, cross country is huge and the expectations of storied programs never change. Elmhurst York is the flagship program and everyone knows to follow in step. However, there are several teams in line to bolster themselves to the forefront. One team in particular is O’Fallon. The Panthers have been the penultimate type team for several years now. The St. Louis area team has been patient for quite for some time. That time may be finally arriving. As well, there will be 25 teams at the end of the day on the course at the fabled Detweiller Park with the same vision as O’Fallon and York.
Our countdown of the top 25 3A girls teams continues with #20-#16.
TERRE HAUTE – Scott Milling admitted it. While every Kroy (York HS, IL) cross-country club has high expectations as part of its DNA, last year’s entry at Nike Cross Nationals Midwest was no sure bet to make it to Portland and extend the program’s streak to eight. So when Milling and Co. learned they were second, even if it was a distant second behind Columbus Thorn (Columbus North HS, IN), it was cause for celebration. (via MileSplit)

MileSplit's National Cross Country Rankings
Hello, my name is Scott Milling and I am a senior at York High School. First, I would like to thank Mr. Grasley and MileSplit Illinois for asking me to write a blog for their site. Each week, I will try to write a blog just talking about that week’s meet and how the team is doing on a whole (right now I’ve moved it over writing an essay on an Emily Dickinson poem, really just a no brainer). Well, let’s just get started…
The states' best headed to the state meet course at Detweiller Park for a preview of what is to come in the coming months. It was a sunny Saturday morning with temperatures in the low 70's with little wind. Ideal racing conditions that would set the state for some blazing times.

In these rankings we take a look at the top teams for the 2012 cross country season based on their season bests from a year ago.
Through the eyes of track season, we can see who has been working the hardest since then. In these rankings, we took the boys 3200 meter track times, removed the seniors, and scored it as a meet. This should give us a good indication of what to look out for this fall.

Joe Newton, at 82 years old, is still coaching cross-country today. Since 1956, at Elmhurst York High School in Illinois, Newton has been the architect of the greatest high school sports dynasty in history. He remains the only high school cross-country coach to ever be selected onto the United States Olympic track and field staff when he was awarded a position in 1988. Jack Driggs just competed in his third Nike Cross Nationals as he led the York (IL) team to another NXN berth with an 18th place individual finish in the race at Portland. After hoping for a top 10 finish in Portland, Driggs will get an opportunity to redeem himself this weekend as one of the 40 finalists for the 2010 Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. It will be his first time racing at Foot Locker Nationals, but Driggs has plenty of national caliber meet racing experience from his three previous appearances at NXN with his York teammates under the legendary coach Joe Newton. Driggs was ranked #17 in the MileSplit US rankings prior to NXN and is one of the nation's top returning milers after winning the Midwest Distance Gala mile last June with a 4:08 performance. MileSplit US interviewed the Illinois state cross country runner-up Driggs heading into his trip to compete at Balboa Park for the Foot Locker Nationals.

Snow and sleet fell from the sky as runners took to the line at Peoria’s Detweiller Park on Saturday, but that wasn’t even the most unexpected occurrence of the 2008 IHSA State Cross Country meet. The US #4 favorite Elmhurst (York) was edged out by US #5 Naperville North by just one point in the Class 3A boys’ race. Naperville North was led by top-10 finishes from Kyle Gibson and David McWilliams on its way to totaling 84 points and winning the state title. Gibson took home fourth place at 14:23, while McWilliams grabbed eighth with his time of 14:35. “To win in a state meet this deep, where there are so many places to switch spots, our kids really needed to run great,”said Naperville North Coach David Racey. “Beating a team like York was tremendous, and with as good as Geneva ran, it really just shows how great Illinois cross country is.” York was led by the usual duo of Steven Sulkin and Jordan Hebert, who took second and third on the day. The two Dukes were right on the heels of the eventual winner, Hoffman Estates Conant’s Jeff Thode, but couldn’t catch him in what turned out to be a very close 3A race.
Mark Feigen won a showdown with Rhode Island rival Andrew Springer at the New England XC Championships. In all, 16 teams ranked in the latest MileSplit National Poll were in action, with 10 of those squads securing titles. Results posted.
On the strength of its record-setting performance in winning the Sweepstakes race at the Mt. SAC Invitational, Saugus (CA) moves past Fayetteville-Manlius into the top spot in the team rankings.
Several recent big meets, such as Nike South, Manhattan College and the Great American have helped to bring some clarity to the rankings. North Central boys and Fayetteville-Manlius girls hold the top spots.
A big weekend of competition generally means some major movement in the national rankings, and that is certainly the case this week. Making the biggest leap is Tatnall (DE) (pictured by Brandon Miles), who after beating then U.S.#4 Collins Hill (GA) at the McDonald's XC Festival at Maymont jumps to US#8 in the girls rankings.
Each week from now until the end of the season, we'll provide a Top 15 Weekend Round-Up. This MileSplit feature will include main highlights of each of the MileSplit nationally ranked squads and their results on the weekend. See who performed well and who didn't live up to their ranking this week.
Highlights and Results from: NB Ocean State Inv. (RI), McDonald's XC Festival (VA), McQuaid Inv. (NY), Roy Griak Inv. (MN), Stanford Inv. (CA), Carlisle Inv. (PA), Jim Danner Inv. (OR), Culver Inv. (IN), Palatine Inv. (IL), LoboCat Inv. (CO), Albuquerque Academy Inv. (NM) & Midwest Meet of Champs. (OH) The best weekend yet. That's an easy way to describe this weekend's national cross country action. Most of the top teams in the land took part in an invitational, with some teams coming up very big. US#5 York (IL) kicked off their season by winning the Palatine Invitational, one of the big highlights of the weekend thus far.
A lot of competitive invitationals took place last weekend, meaning that a few of the top teams in the country lost to unranked squads. With those loses comes new teams jumping into the week #4 MileSplit National Cross Country Rankings. See who's in and who's out in this week's edition.
With many of the top teams in the country running in their first or second competition of the year, the MileSplit National CC Rankings are starting to take better shape. Boys U.S.#1 North Central (WA) opened their season in victorious fashion, while Girls U.S.#1 Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) has yet to compete, but is looking strong in practices.
The first round of XC Regional Rankings, released by NSSF and produced by Marc Bloom and Rich Gonzalez, ranked three Illinois boys teams and three Illinois girls teams among the Midwest top ten. York, Neuqua Valley and Naperville North ranked first, second and sixth respectively, while Geneva, Hinsdale Central and Palatine rank second, fifth and ninth on the girls side. Four boys teams and two girls teams are listed as bubble teams.
It was a long time coming, but The Long Green Line finally premiered at the U.S. Olympic Trials Thursday evening in front of a crowd of over 200 people. In 2005, the young men apart of the legendary York High School cross country team were followed throughout the season, as the cameras captured the highs and lows of the season and the high emotions that a cross country team goes through from August until early December. Losing two of their top stars in the back half of the season, having to play with top seven line-ups numerous times and living up to the fatherly embrace coach Joe Newton shows all his athletes made this film one that every high school athlete should watch during their summer training. Overall this film receives a 4.5/5 stars. Read inside for more movie recap and check out The Long Green Line website here.
It's finally here. The Illinois Boys State Track and Field Championship is finally upon us. Despite windy, cold and wet conditions over the course of the outdoor season, the weather finally looks perfect just when it's needed most. As the top athletes assemble in Charleston this coming weekend, speculation abounds over most of the events. Will Dan Block throw 210 feet in the discus, can Kraig Appleton break the state record in the 300m hurdles and how about Chris Derrick having a shot to win both the 1600m and 3200m? Those are the questions, add in nearly a dozen more, competitive fields all around and a tight team battle and we have the making of one of the best state track and field championships Illinois has ever seen. Start getting excited and check out our AA state preview.

(Photo By Thomas Rizzo)Usually running 9:07 as a junior would earn a runner national acclaim. However, Tom Achtein (Sr., York, IL) continues to fly under the radar despite running under 9:10 twice last spring and leading his team to another Nike Team National birth last fall (plus another state cross country title). This year, Achtein looks to add his name to the historic York record books, as he reaches for the next level in his final high school year.
