Coming into this affair some critical notes were heaved upon several of the West Suburban Conference (Silver) teams for not racing much on regulation courses. But all could be forgiven rectified with a performance on Lyon Township's blazing fast school layout. This would one though would be 5000 meters in length.
The race opened with a tight sea of blue/maize, green, and purple that encompassed the runners from Lyons Township, York, and Downers Grove North.
The opening mile was very compact as seniors Lyons Township Owen Hays and Jocqael Thorpe led the way in 4:48. It was just a month ago they thought going out in 4:55 was a challenge. #2 Lyons loaded up fro the first time in a while despite not having one of their best runners in Finn Gallagher. Downers Grove North had top man Evan Cummins back in the fold. The Trojans had all of their scorers in position. York on the other hand had a few personnel issues that left them four starters short of competing to their full capabilities.
As things started to string out, it was clear that Lyons and DGN would decide things. The second mile passed in approximately 9:48- Hays and Thorpe leading the charge.
The final mile saw things tighten up between the Lions and the Trojans. Thorpe and Hays pulled away from the field and would eventually finish first and second in 15:24 and 15:26 (14:52 through three miles). The margin of victory would be seven points with strong closing finishes by the home team. As for the WSC Silver, they passed the litmus test and should now be a conference to be reckoned with during the post-season.
