Just like the boys, we enter the month of May which happens to be the "championship" month for track and field athletes in this state. Since our last publication, there has been significant movement.

The short sprint game is mighty strong and the leader of the 100- and 200-meter dashes belongs to Mariyah Robinson of Chicago Simeon whose wind-legal 12.13 and 25.16 are the real deal. Robinson may have been overshadowed by the tremendous talent that exists in the Chicago Public League, but she can't be overlooked.

The future is now for Annika Swan of Chicago St. Ignatius. She has taken her class by storm this season, leading the 800m with a 2:12.92- which ranks fifth overall in the state and fifth among the nation's freshies. As good as she is in the half-mile, Swan may be a better 1600/miler. Her personal best 4:53.82m is from the indoor season. Add in the 3200 (10:49.11) and 400 (59.40) as the top three marks in the class, can we say checkmate?
