The relays are a risky business but at the same time can yield high rewards. They are fun to watch as well can be big point gainers for teams who are powerful.
I once heard a trusted and well respected coach say "cross country is a short season." Much to the reality of what he said, he was right. The coach I am referring to was speaking to a group of inexperienced runners near the end of a summer camp training run. For them August through the month of October is prime cross country season.
The early morning chill and dew could not put a damper on a day meant for cross country. Detweiller Park in Peoria featured three championship races: 1A, 2A, 3A. All events coincided with the girls each hour, which makes for a festive but exhaustive day.

"There is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in win." This was the sentiment of one coach after an amazing evening of top notch performances at the Al B. Carius Indoor Track and Field on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. The "I" simply refers to one getting check mated like a chess match. Game over.
The 12th Annual Mustangs Relays has become a sort of rites of passage for Illinois teams seeking to run fast times....
The distance events (including the 4x8 relay) is going to another pressure cooker this season. Count on it!
The 4x800m relay without question is the deepest and most popular event on the boys event ledger. In 2014, there were an amazing 15 teams ranked among the nation's top 100- the most of any state in this great union. There were 34 teams that broke 8:00 which also was #1 in the country.
Arguably the best time of the year for cross country is December. December is the month of which some of the best individuals and teams in the nation were rewarded for the hard efforts and dedication to the sport. NIKE of course went out of their way in making sure each kid had the weekend of their running lives…

NXN Midwest & Northwest, Ostrander races for first time since early October, suprise Michiganders go big!
Indiana has always shown love to its guests when it comes to sports. Cross Country over the years has been a big beneficiary in that department. It started with the AAU, TAC, and USATF post-season regional and national meets for the tots, leading all the way up to the NCAA national championships and the professional ranks. Nike Cross Nationals got in on the action in 2007 and has never looked back.
The Sandburg boys of Illinois might have the tighest top 5 spread in America! Only 7 seconds to win NXN Midwest!

State week! Historic Detweiller Park in Peoria has held a special place in my heart ever since I first ran there my sophomore year during the season but I don’t think I’m the only person in Illinois who feels that way. I’ve been to the state meet both as part of a qualifying team and to watch individuals from our school, and it is hard to parallel the excitement and energy at the park.

One of the prevailing feelings coming in was the boys and girls chess piece landscape had not been completed.
his is the reason that the commonly phased Peoria Notre Dame Invitational or PND will be officially referred as the Richard Spring Memorial Invitational on paper: “Richard Spring, a 1981 graduate of Bergan High School in Peoria, ran cross-country, the mile, and the two-mile. Participating on two state championship teams, Richard personally finished third in the single-class IHSA state tournament in his senior year. Richard died running at Augustana College in 1982.”
"There are so many good teams but not enough time"- a wise quote from a high school historian who proclaimed that when a sport is good there is not enough time to really enjoy it. The upcoming boys large classification may fit that bill. A new star was born last year when Hinsdale Central joined the elite class and won their first state championship going away. This year it should be another great cast of scenarios for us all to follow and enjoy.... strap it up and make the time!
This season teams will experience a log jam along the food chain... their will be some traditional mainstays such as Prospect, Lyons Twp., and Sandburg looking to get back to their rightful place in Peoria in November. They are going to have their hands full with emerging teams from the conference level all the way through the sectional round. Only those poised enough to handle the treacherous path will earn a spot on the famed Detweiller Park starting line.
