For the 3A girls, this fall cross country season, unlike most is filled with uncertainty and optimism. The uncertainty is the high graduation rate will create some opportunities for some returners to really step up and shine.

When one era comes to an end another one emerges. Three season ago we saw a young sophomore Jesse Reiser (McHenry) come on to the scene and finish 7th. Reiser would eventually go on to win several state titles (xc, track) and collect a few more All-American plaques. Now, the time is for someone else to pick up the pieces and run away with it. Could that someone be Matt Pereira, Charlie Kern Jr., Clayton Mendez?

The 2A division seems to be a mix between the known and unknown when it comes to cross country. For one person in the name of Maryjeanne Gilbert, she appears to be the odds on favorite as the top runner from beginning to end. Gilbert was the top overall runner in Illinois last season and very well could be again this fall.

The Illinois girls have stormed on to the national stage in recent years with respect. It was last November that two elite teams qualified for the Nike Cross Country National in Portland, Oregon. Naperville North took 4th place and Palatine, an at-large entry, copped a very respectable 12th after being stiffed a year prior. Without going any further, this could be one of the most memorable years state and national wide for Illinois girls.
