Before the start of the second Select Challenger Meet held inside the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track & Field Center, the hype was real. It was no secret that Chicago Public League's best girls and boys track and field teams would be in attendance. Whitney Young, Kenwood, Lane Tech, and Kenwood brought their best efforts to the table on a school evening.

Defending girl's indoor champion Whitney Young was serious as they semi-loaded their team, probably finding out what their inventory looked like. The Dolphins started their assault against their opponents in the field events. The evening's notable performance was by senior Layla Bonilla in the triple jump. She had been inching toward greatness the past several years, finally connecting on an IL#2 39'5.25", which is also among the top 20 marks in the country. She also won the high jump in easy fashion.
The Dolphins' workhorse of the evening was senior Simone Bernard. She won her primary event, the 60HH (9.12), took second in the 60 (7.93), and sixth in the 200 (26.86). It was a good day that will bode well down the road.
The Dolphins star of the show was, of course, senior Angelena Bullocks. She cruised to wins in the 60 (7.56) and 200 (24.55). The latter was a state best.
Lane Tech showed flashes of toughness, winning a slew of events on the track: Ainsley Carter (800- 2:25.38), 4x200 (1:49.78), Kaila Burns (400/1:00.18), Idaly Cristobal (1600/5:33.51), and 4x400 (4:18.25).
The Kenwood boys unveiled their top-heavy roster against solid squads from Lane and Whitney Young.
The Broncos took two of three spots in the 60. Seniors Parrish Hartley and Armond Boulware went 1-2 with 7.06 and 7.15 marks. The Broncos duplicated the feat in the 400 on the strength of senior duo Isaiah Irvin and Taylor Shurtliff's 51.37 and 51.38.
Kenwood was not done. They completed a hat trick in the 200, taking the top three spots by Boulware, Hartley, and Logic West. The times were 22.12, 22.29, and 22.70.
Lane did not win any track events, but they have improved in the field events game, scoring high in all five events and winning the shot put by Daniel Howard, who threw 49'1."
The Champions of Lane were respectable on the track as well. Senior Owen Lilley won the final section of the 800 in 2:00.62. He would take second to Payton senior Preston Ellis, who clocked a state-best 1:56.70. He filled in for teammate and fellow senior Ryan Murray, who was sick.
Whitney Young set a state best in the 4x200, surprising the field, and blasted away in 1:31.38.
Payton closed the evening with an IL#2 4x400 in 3:26.82.
