The first day of track and field action was exactly what the experts had predicted in terms of dropping great performances and action packed excitement throughout the morning and afternoon sessions. The morning started with 2A Lombard Montini winning the opening heat of the 4x800 relay in 9:36.16. That time stood up as the top mark of the three sections. St. Charles East ended the long day in the 3A 4x400 relay clocking a tremendous 3:52.99. All in all the 73 degree day was filled with sunshine, smiles, laughter and of course disappointment and sadness.

The two-time defending state champion Frankfort Lincoln-Way East had a few hiccups during a trying 2015 season. They hired a new head coach Brian Evans. But he was not the problem. There was emerging and teams receiving predetermined hype but not living up to it when it counted. They were not the problem. There were pre-approved trips to pristine places like the Texas Relays and Arcadia Invitational. That wasn't the problem.
It's that time again... whew time flew by quick when you are focused and set on your goals. The annual B-Side sprint flat races and relay predictions are in order. These are purely my picks and my thoughts alone. I hope you enjoy them and good luck to all of you this weekend!
As always the 2A classification is the hardest to figure out. But fortunately the preliminary round will sort things out well. The action at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University will take place Friday morning with the field events slated to go off at 8am. The track events will commence at 9am.
Every since the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) moved to allow Class A to have Thursday as their own featured showcase preliminary day the town of Charleston has become a small town festival. Things will begin on Wednesday morning when hotels and dorms of Eastern Illinois University swell up to capacity. As for the action itself there should be some very good performances.
