2024 produced some of the deepest fields in IHSA history among the standard relays: 4x800, 4x400, 4x200, and 4x100.

This year's 4x100 relay was probably the deepest field since the stopwatch era of the 1980s. Certainly, in the fully automated timing area (widely considered in the late 1990s), there is no doubt that the depth was presented. Edwardsville led the charge with a 41.35, just outside the top 100 national times. Overall, there were 15 marks under 42.00.

By classification, 3A produced ten marks under 42 seconds, and 2A copped four. Class A enjoyed its deepest year under the three-class system. Morrison ran 42.34 and won the state championship.

The 4x200 relay has always been classified as a "B team" relay because alternates, or teams with depth in their speed inventory, can deploy viable units. However, in the case of the state championship, some teams will occasionally load up "A team" units when it's convenient for them.
