2A Boys Cross Country Team Preview: #25 to #21 Countdown

Unclassified teams-

Elmwood Park

Coach: Patrick Sheridan

Last Year’s Finish: 25th at 2A State

Key returners:

Dante Bruno (Sr.): (16:19)
Keit Dine (Sr.): (16:23)

Nick Wojcik (Sr.): (17:03)

Cameron Rybak Sr.): (17:29)

Justin Nieves (So.): (18:07)

Tyler Starnes (Sr.): (11:20,5:24)

Coach Sheridan's outlook: “We’ve only been to state 4 times (1991 and 1992 when we got dropped to 1A in the old 2 class system, and in 2013 and 2014), and this year will be the fifth year (if all goes according to plan). We graduated #1 and #4 and hopefully this large senior class can step it to make a big push this year. I think we should be in the top 20 in state. We typically have only 25 guys on the team, and I am working to change that…along with the culture of the program.”

Regarding Senior Tyler Starnes, Coach Sheridan: “First year doing cross country, did track the last 2 years. Legally blind and deaf, has poured his heart into distance running and has shown a passion and dedication I have only seen out of 2-3 people in my life. I was on York teams that set national records and won state championships. Tyler has as much, if not more, dedication and perseverance than almost ANY runner I have ever been around. He loves his teammates and they love how hard he tries on a daily basis. Even though it is his first year in cross country, he won last fall’s booster club 5k, and WILL BE one of our top leaders this year.”

Coach Brodeur' s outlook: “We are a young team that is fortunate to have strong Senior leaders. We expect that new guys will step up this year and continue success that they had from track. We expect to have many PRs while looking towards positive results in Conference and the State Series. We will work to continue past team traditions while creating an environment that supports teammates.”

Coach: Tom Wazio
Last Year’s Finish: 15th at Marist Sectional (3A)

Jack Mongan (Jr.): (16:35,4:42)

Joe Sweeney (Jr.): (16:14,10:24,5:01)

Brendan Coughlan (Jr.): (16:38)
Jake Rafferty (Sr.): (17:15,10:55)

Mark Seavers (Sr.): (17:53)

Coach Wazio's outlook: “The challenge for this team will be to see who progresses and who is able to step into the role as solid 4th and 5th runners, after losing some key members from last year's team. With the notification that we will compete in the 2A classification this season in the state series, our goals as a team have changed. We hope to take advantage of this opportunity and do what only 4 other teams have done in school history, and that is qualify for the state meet. Also, our timeline as far as training goes, has shifted a little, with 100% emphasis being at our best on one day, sectionals.”

Sycamore

Coach: Mike Lambdin

Last Year’s Finish: 10th at Kaneland Sectional

Key returners:

Sam Zurbuch (Sr.): (16:09)

Stephen Poorten (So.): (16:14)

Brian Johnston (Sr.): (16:54)

Ryan Guss (Sr.): (17:15)

Connor Farrell (Jr.): (18:02)

John Lerohl (Jr.)

J.J. Madden (Jr.)

Quinton Benzscahwel (So.)
Jake Carani (So.)

Coach Lambdin's outlook: “Summer running has been pretty good. Our top varsity guys have consistently attended workouts. Additionally, many of our promising young runners have been showing up on a fairly regular basis. The vast majority of our summer training has been base building. Our top three should be competitive matching up nicely with many of the teams in the area. The key to our success will be the development of a solid fourth and fifth man. If all goes as planned, we hope to be running well at the end of the season improving on last years 10th place sectional finish.”
