Outlook: There are two sections of the HOKA mile, the penultimate section will be a great lead into the main event. There is a strong possibility of someone breaking 5:00. Of all 16 runners coming in, 15 are seeded 5:15 or faster, the top mark is by Lily Kriegel (Sr., Whitefish Bay, WI) at 5:01.92).

Section 2 or the main event could be one for the ages on Illinois soil indoors or outside despite the ommission of two low 4:40 type runners. The 2021 IL state meet saw three girls under 4:45 and 12 under 5:00. Ironically, "Ali" Allison Ince (Sr., Normal Community) was on the winning side of that affair with an astronomical mark of 4:40.85 for 1600m. Ince is also the Dr. Worrill facility record holder and current US#2 4:46.67.

There are several runners to watch out for. The first one on the list is the top seed from Texas Samantha Humphries. Let's keep in mind that this race will be her first of the season and a short turnaround after placing 8th at the Footlocker Cross Country National Championship last month. Humphries has not run many indoor meets, but her personal best of 4:40.10 is something to ponder.

Fellow Footlocker All-American Abby Cheeseman and Humphries will get acquainted again. Cheeseman is the reigning NBNO 2-mile champion who has battled Humphrie in the mile several times. Her PB is 4:42.79 (1600).

Jessica Jazwinski appears to be the most sharp and race-ready runner in the field. She has competed in several 1600s, including 4:48.98. If she has another great race, she will still the spotlight in the talented and crowded state of Michigan.

Not as known as some of the others, but still talented is Josefina Rastrelli. She clocked 4:49.49 to take second at the Indiana State meet last spring. Rastrelli has also run 2:14.97 in the 800 and 10:45 for 3200. That kind of range will keep her in the race as long as it takes to nab a top-five finish.

The home state will counter with the wildly successful Scout Storms and Annika Swan. Storms came of age by winning her first cross country state title in the fall (3A) and Swan took second in the 2A division. They have been better track runners who have not competed against one another on a big stage. It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be. Storms' style is a methodical front running element while Swan aggressively goes to the front of the pack without thought to it. In a perfect outcome, both should be under 4:55 in this season's event debut.
