We have patiently waited... and waited... and waited for Marianne Mihas to make her 2021 debut. Many of her fans thought the senior star from Chicago Latin HS had gone through a prolonged winter hibernation. However, she emerged in Virginia Beach, Virginia over the weekend at the 757 Showdown with a gutsy performance in the 800m.
Everything was set up on Saturday by the Parekh siblings Ava Parekh and Akili Parekh of Chicago Latin. Ava produced another quality effort taking second in the two-mile with a time of 10:23.19. Meanwhile, Akili made his season debut and dropped personal bests in the two-mile and mile with respectable times of 10:01.72 and 4:41.37.
As is her customary style, Mihas likes to control the pace and she did for the first two circuits in 31.1 and 64.9. Her teammate Parekh was on the inside shoulder as well as a slew of pursuers. Parekh would lead momentarily and fighting for supremacy on the backstretch. All of the insurrection was a perfect setup for Aniya Mosley of Ocean Lake HS in Virginia Beach who moved to the front with minimal resistance on the final lap to win in a US#10 2:12.97. Mihas slipped just a tad bit but finished third in a state-leading and US#13 2:14.09. Parekh completed her tour in 2:16.09- good for US#21 and IL#2.
