It was just before 11am and the boys were filtering over to starting. Three Sisters Park was buzzing from the girl's action. The boys would take to their stage soon and before the king Drew Rogers of Herscher gets to his throne, some other races needed to be finished.
Flight 1 saw Luke Stegall of St. Joe-Ogden win easily in 17:44. Stegall led most of the way and the feeling of a taking a flight victory is priceless.
The third flight was the emergence of Elgin Harvest Academy (Elgin Holy Cow Athletics). Gavin Genisio of Benton took the lead with a fast opening mile in 5:04. The second mile was unforgiving and the pack caught him just before the second mile. Hayden Colclasure of HCA pulled the victory out in 16:20.
Now... the big race is flight four and it featured the greats of the classification after Rogers. Justin Mumford (Wesclin), Miles Sheppard (West Hancock), Ryder James (PBL), Layton Hall (Arthur), and Matthew Olech (HCA) were all there in the first mile that rolled 4:58-5:00.
One would have thought Rogers would have taken off but in the second mile, he was still there in 10:07 with the same pack. However, shortly thereafter, Rogers shifted gears and pulled away for the win 15:34. It was perhaps his easiest money victory of the year and it was against a beastly field. Mumford took second in 15:41. Next was Shepard in third with a time of 15:42, James 15:50, and Hall 15:58.
The team battle was a hard battle with HCA fighting back against Arthur over the final few flights to pull out the victory.
