In Her Own Words: Skyler Bollinger - A Day Of Firsts

It was a day of firsts for Yorkville this past Saturday. Both our boys and girls teams won state titles for 2A! For the girls it was a 3-peat, and for the boys it was the first XC state title in school history. Although some of our races didn’t go quite as planned we still pulled it out for one of the most exciting days I’ve ever experienced. On the girls’ side, we started the race in third and continued to move up throughout the race until we had the lead. We knew it would be a close race and waited by the results stand for a while after the boys race until an official told us it would be a while. Of course there were technical difficulties with getting the results done and we had to wait hours to know what had happened. Finally about two or three long, agonizing hours later, Muth finally came over to break the news. We’d won.

After we had all celebrated and gotten our medals and trophy, we waited for the results of the boys’ race. They started their race in eighth place through the first mile and somehow pulled out an amazing second half to get the win!  Everyone was hoping for a trophy but no one expected a first place trophy. Winning the girls race was very exciting but the day got 1000x better when the boys won and we could celebrate together. It was a fairytale ending to a perfect meet.

After an endless picture session and a delicious meal from Chili’s, we finally headed home.  When we arrived back in Yorkville that night, we had a parade through town complete with fire trucks and quite a long line of honking cars. At school this week there will also be a pep assembly to celebrate the win. It’s great to have such a wonderful support from our town back home. The fun just never stops in Yorkville!

Although we do have some very talented runners on our team, we couldn’t have done it all without our amazing coaches. We have the best coaches in the whole entire world and we couldn’t ask for any better. They manage to push us to the limit and make us into state champions while still keeping it fun everyday. They are there six, sometimes seven days a week putting up with our shenanigans, on top of their other jobs!  We couldn’t have done it without you Muth, Draper, Bales, and Chatman so thank you for everything you do!  GO FOXES!!!
