In Her Own Words: Rachel Devereux - Eating Like A Champion

As important as the training miles and workouts are to becoming a successful cross country runner, I don't forget another big component... eating!!!

My dad has always said that eating and hydrating are key in becoming a good runner. Lucky for me I get the privilege of eating like a champion every day. My usual menu for a day begins with breakfast, which consists of steak and eggs, two Eggo waffles, and a glass of orange juice.  For lunch, a nice homemade PB&J sandwich and a granola bar as a special treat. Then I always have a banana before practice, it’s a must. Depending on practice I might get some "dawg chow" in there before dinner. "Dawg chow" is our teams own rendition of Chex mix. We recently shook things up a bit and switched from regular Cheerios to Honey Nut Cheerios which was an excellent choice on our coach’s part! Then after that delightful snack it’s about time for dinner. Dinner happens to be my favorite, I am very fortunate to get to enjoy such meals as steak and crab legs, or even lobster, steak and well more steak. Other weekly dishes include pasta and pork, but I could eat steak for days.

I am truly blessed to have my own personal chef that just so happens to make all of these wonderful meals for me, I’m even luckier to call him my dad! Yes, my dad is the chef in the Devereux household and boy is he a fine one at that. He’s always trying to find new recipes and new ways to enrich my diet. Some of his secrets include cooking in an iron skillet to increase iron and writing an H on my hand to help remind me to keep hydrating throughout the day. Little things like this help me stay on track and focused when it comes to my diet during the season.  Next year, when I am at college I know I will really miss the home cooked meals.  Thanks Dad for being the chef that you are, because if we left it up to mom…we would both be in trouble!
