This Week's Nominees:
Kara Glenn(So., St. Charles North): Pulled off one of the most amazing feats in IHSA history. It started ... Friday afternoon in 3A competition is when Glenn began her quest. She won the 800 in 2:07.85, the fastest time ever for a prelim. Several hours later came the 1600 prelim, and again it was a tremendous effort in a downpour, with Glenn blasting 4:48.57. It was a time fast enough to place third overall if it represented the final.
On Saturday, the first event of the day was section 2 of 3 3200m. Glenn ran an amazing, tactical race and won by 45 secs with a time of 10:11.59. After refueling and more than an hour later, Glenn was on the track with her teammates for the 4x800 relay. The North Stars would go on to establish an all-time best 8:54.50. Glenn's 2:05.70 tote was the major highlight. Now, it was time for the 800m. Will the fireworks continue? Glenn took charge with an opening lap in 62.3 and won going away with a new state-leading 2:05.66. It would be the 10th-fastest time in the country and would have just missed the all-time state meet record. The final event of the day was also in record form. After trailing Mia Sirois for the first half, Glenn bolted into the lead on the third lap, and it was curtains, running away to a new state best 4:41.28.
Mia Sirois, Barrington: The outstanding junior won the 3A 3200 at the 3A IHSA Girls Track & Field State Championship in 9:44.16, setting an all-time mark and posting a US#2 performance. Also, Sirois finished 2nd in the 1600 in 4:46.30, establishing a new personal best.
Daisha Brunson, Hoffman Estates Conant: The star junior will be off to the University of Michigan this fall. Before she goes, she achieved a first for Class 3A, winning four consecutive 100HH titles. Brunson, one of the most prolific short hurdlers in the state, ran 13.67 (-0.9). Later, she placed to the state's top sprinter in the 200, running a personal best 23.77 (+1.1).
Maliyah Miller, Chicago (St. Ignatius College Prep): Captured the 400 title at the 3A IHSA Girls Track & Field State Championship in 53.95, beating 88 other competitors, establishing a state-leading time. Also placed 2nd in the 100 in 11.91 and took 5th in the 200 in 24.00.
Zion Young, Maroa (M.-Forsyth): Threw a state-leading 45-8.75 to win the shot put at the 1A IHSA Girls Track & Field State Championship, topping a field of 91 throwers with the best mark in Illinois this season.
Jayla Gathing, Edwardsville: Put up a winning throw of 151-5.5 in the discus at the 3A IHSA Girls Track & Field State Championship, claiming the title in a field of 96 competitors.
Sophia Shapiro, Edwardsville: The outstanding junior had a spectacular day in the hurdles and assisted her teammates in two all-state relays. In Shapiro's first event, she placed second in the 100HH (13.79/-0.9), to one of the state's most prolific performers, Daisha Brunson. Later, it was the 300H, Shapiro won in 41.29, the 9th fastest time in the country. Shapiro's time is also the 3rd fastest performer in state history.
