Plainfield South and Camyn Viger (Sr.) love to compete in the Meet of Champions. The Cougars came in as the team defending champ, and Viger won the last two offerings (Soph and varsity races). This time, the deck was stacked a little against them.

#2 Arlington Heights (Hersey) and #3 Oak Park-River Forest came from hot performances at the Richard Spring Invitational the weekend prior. They turned in state trophy efforts, which was a little concerning to Coach Jason Crowe and his team.

The race got out at a brisk pace (4:45) with Dylan Maloney (Jr., Plainfield South), Viger, Ben Crane (Jr., New Trier), Joe Bregenzer (Jr., Barrington), and a few others. There were so many different runners from various schools intertwined that it was hard to decipher team scores. One thing is certain: Hersey and OPRF did not have the same numbers up top as last weekend.

Entering the second mile, Maloney led the chase pack by several meters, but Viger was stocking him and ready to move into position. The defending Cougars had three runners in the top 20, Plainfield North was moving up, and Barrington showed a few cards. Maloney and Viger passed the second-mile post in approximately 9:44-45 and with momentum.

Viger asserted himself into the lead and began stretching the field. Crane was in second place and looking strong. But Viger dashed home with his third combined title in 14:36. His team again earned the spoils of victory.
