Do You Remember When... Kelly O'Brien Set 800m Record at DGN

2016 was one of the best days in terms of weather for the meet. At the onset of the track action, the Mercury still hovered in the low 60s despite a light breeze. Distance running has always been a staple in the annual Downers Grove North Girls Invitational named in honor of its fabled emeritus hall of fame coach Bruce Ritter. Earlier, the 800m was set up by Glenbard West's superb effort in the 4x800 relay won in a state-best 9:18.79. Palatine senior Kelly O'Brien did not run on the relay, thus putting herself in a fresh leg spot to drop a pristine mark. Indeed, O'Brien led from the gun as expected with senior Vanessa Flaherty of Lyons Twp on her hip. They would battle for much of the race until O'Brien pulled away for the win a state-leading 2:13.44.
