John Meyer waited until after New
Balance Nationals Indoor to spin his way to an all-time mark in the shot
put.
Nice timing.
The Lockport Township
(IL) High senior, a University of Michigan recruit, became the only athlete
this indoor season to throw at least 70 feet, setting a new state record on
March 17 at the SWSC Indoor Conference Championships with the No. 18 best throw
all-time of 70 feet, 4.25 inches in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
But Meyer still isn't
done.
He's got one more indoor meet left in him this weekend at
Illinois Top Times, where the meet record currently stands at 62-8.5. That mark
was last set in 2017 by Sam Sikon of Carbondale.
Meyer has been inching
closer to that elusive mark, though, since late February when he broke through
for a personal best of 68-4 at the Olivet Nazarene University High School
Classic. He followed with another best of 68-6, then a throw at 67-8 in ensuing
weeks.
Meyer has over a
nine-foot progression since the beginning of the season, when he opened with a
mark of 61-1 at the Ted Haydon Holiday Classic.
