Will Dylan Jacobs become a state titlist on Saturday?
The Dylan Jacobs vs. Danny Kilrea match up for the state title has been talked about for weeks. Enough talk already. It is time to get it on. According to Jacob's coach John O'Malley, he is in the best shape of his life and has completed some workouts similiar to former IHSA great Lukas Verzbicas. That is saying alot for sure. Jacobs is ready to win the race first and then go for the record.
As for Kilrea, he has been mum- sort of- in regards to how he wants to attack the race on Saturday. It now appears that he capitulated a bit last weekend to save his best for this weekend. That was a smart move since his team advanced with ease anyway.
The long standing record may or may not fall depending on the course conditions at 2p. As well sometimes great fields do not run as fast as everyone wants because of tactics. This group of top notch runners may just play possum for two miles and see what happens in the final mile. Clayton Mendez of Whitney Young is back on form and may push the pace a bit. He has felt slighted all season long. We will just have to wait until about 2:14pm for the final outcome.
