Liz Cox Blog: Farwell To All

"I'm really going to miss this crazy group of girls"- Liz Cox

Track State is over for both boys and girls, many schools are finishing up their last few days, and many seniors have already graduated. Things have wrapped up for high school athletes.

As usual, State was a lot of fun. Everyone did a solid job and Caitlin Reidy had a great race just missing finals in the 300 hurdles, Amy K. stepped up big with an 14th place finish, and Kelly O’Brien just missed the win with an outstanding 2nd in the 1600. We also placed 3rd in the 4x800 relay. It wasn’t quite the state championship we had been gunning for all year, but it’s still a great accomplishment and credit goes to Loyola (2nd) and St. Charles East (1st) who both had outstanding races.

"Final pre-race huddle with the 4x8 squad"- Liz Cox

The end of state meant the end of high school athletics for me. I plan to represent Illinois in the Senior Spotlight Track and Field meet on June 14, but my days competing as a Pirate are done. I’m excited to try different things with my running. I plan to compete in my first triathlon this summer, and I imagine I will compete in half-marathons or marathons at some point in my future. As I continue my track and cross country career in college I might also give steeplechase a try. I am excited for the new opportunities that lie ahead of me, but it’s hard leaving the team that has been my family for the past 4 years.

"Last time at State with my best friend"- Liz Cox

It’s even stranger that I will no longer be on the same team with my long-time best friend Cassidy McPherson. Cassidy and I started together in Girls on the Run in 4th grade, and we’ve been running together ever since. Although I’m sure Cass and I will still go on runs, we won’t be on the same team. On the contrary, we may actually compete against each other. University of Chicago (Cassidy’s school) and MIT (my school) actually tied for fourth place at Division III Cross Country Nationals last year.

It’s also always an adjustment running under a new coach. The coaches at Palatine have really helped me come into my own the last 4 years and I am very thankful for that. I am going to miss running for my Pirate coaches, but I know I will still be able receive advice and help if I need it.

"Priveleged to have been a part of the MileSplit team this season".- Liz Cox

The track and cross country program at Palatine had given me friendships, role models, and a constant source of fun.  I want to thank MileSplit for giving me a platform where I could share all the fun I’ve had in this sport. I hope readers enjoyed getting a small glimpse of the life of a Lady Pirate.

One final shout-out to everyone competing in the Senior Spotlight meet (go team Illinois!) and everyone competing in New Balance Outdoor Nationals the same weekend. Seniors, good luck with the next stage of your running career, and underclassmen good luck with your Cross Country and Track seasons next year.
