Zack Smith Blog: It's Sectional Time

After many months of preparation and hard work, it is great to get down to the two weeks that all track and field athletes and fans look forward to the most...

Before I get to this week's sectional, I want to talk a little bit about the conference meet from this past Friday night.  Despite the cool temperatures, it was a great night to run fast, and a lot of guys took advantage of this.  I want to give a big shout out to Ryan Clevenger on his 9:07 3200m win, which was no doubt the most impressive performance of the night.  He is rolling and is ready for the next two weeks.

The 4x800 also ran very well running a season best of 7:55.  I know a bunch of guys on the team have been waiting to drop this kind of time, and are confident that we can go even faster in the postseason.  Plugging in Ryan for me will drop a few seconds right off the bat, and there are more PRs about to come for the rest of the squad as well.  Outside of the 4x800 on Friday, I was able to win the 1600 with a season best time for me.  Billy Magnesen [Hinsdale Central senior] ran a fantastic race and really put himself in good position the whole way.  I just kept telling myself to hang on to him so that he could pull me around the track.  He is in great shape and has big things to come the next two weeks.  Outside of some of the distance performances, points were scored all around the track and in the field! The team was able to take home second against some of the best competition in state!

Looking ahead to the sectional on Friday, I am very excited to double in the 3200 and 1600.  I know there will be great competition throughout the postseason, but I am prepared for the tough racing and am ready to close my DGN career strong.  Hinsdale Central and Sandburg will provide great competition for us in all of the distance events at the sectional.  We are looking to qualify a good amount of guys for the state meet in two weeks, and we believe we can put up some points down there as well.  We know that if we can get up into the 30-point range we will give ourselves a chance to trophy, so this is our goal going into the postseason.  For now, we are focused on making it down from the sectional this week, and are taking it one step at a time.  I look forward to competing and watching the rest of my teammates compete this weekend!  It should be a good one and we are ready as a team!  I hope everyone enjoys the best two weeks of track in Illinois, thanks for reading!
