In Her Own Words: Rachel Devereux

They say that your high school years go by pretty fast, from the moment you walk through those doors of that first day of freshman year, all the way until that last day of your senior year. To me, high school has felt like a four mile race. Freshman year is just like the first mile. You take off in a dead sprint not really knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Sophomore year similar to the second mile, you start to get into that steady pace that you’re going to hold through the remainder of the race. Junior year otherwise known as the third mile you’re in your set pace just cruising a long like its nothing, surging here and there, trying to gain some extra ground. Finally, the fourth mile, the last mile to go you pick up speed knowing that the finish line is right there and you can’t wait to be done, and what do you know it’s your last year, senior year.  That is how I look at my journey through these four years at St. Teresa. Life is all just one big race and you have to be willing to take it step by step, stride by stride, knowing you’ll have to climb up a few hills but also knowing you have the strength to push through it.

Hi, my name is Rachel Devereux and I am a senior at Saint Teresa High School. For those of you who know, or follow the St. T cross country and track program, I am the girl who wears the cape! I have been running all four years throughout high school and plan to take my running to the next level in college. Exactly where yet is undecided, but my options are open. Right now all I am focusing on is my senior year for running. As some of you may know, Saint Teresa has had a lot of success with our running program. We are three time state champions and hold the lowest scoring record at the state meet in Illinois with 41 points. Three of our top seven were all state including , Ivy Handley (1st), Megan Burgener (15th), and myself who placed 3rd. Out of our top seven however, we lost four out of the seven, as they all are going off to college. This means we have a lot of girls who are going to have to fill those places but all of them capable of doing the challenge. You’ll be able to meet the team as my blogging continues throughout the season, but for right now let me have the honor of introducing the seniors. We have Cailin Jerger, Audrey Vandercar, and I who are not only the three seniors but also the three captains’ for the girls team.  And over on the guys’ team we have seniors and boys captains’ Madison Velchek, Benji Addai, and Josh Montague. Of course we are all led by Coach Todd Vohland and assistant coach and former St. T alumni, Heather Hackel.

This year is going to be something else seeing who is going to step up and fill the top seven, seeing if we can win our fourth straight championship title! But the best part about this upcoming season is that I get to do it with my family, and we are all in it together. We arrive as team, we run as a team, and we leave as a team; one sport, one love, one big crazy family.
