Puskedra to Attempt Breaking Prep Two-Mile Record at Pre Classic Scott Bush Jun 03, 2008

https://www.milesplit.com/files/usa/indoor08/plnin.jpgIt was reported early last week that middle-distance sensation Chanelle Price (PA) entered the women's 800m dash at the Prefontaine Classic. Well another high school athlete has joined the Prefontaine Classic this week, as Utah distance runner Luke Puskedra (pictured left in lead at NIN by John Herzog) has entered the men's two-mile. According to a MileSplit source, Puskedra will be attempting to break the high school two-mile record of 8:36.3h set back in 1979 by Jeff Nelson. More information coming on both Price's and Puskedra's Pre Classic races.

https://www.milesplit.com/files/usa/arcadia08/cderrickrace.jpgA fantastic season came crashing to a halt today.  Stanford-bound senior Chris Derrick (Sr., Neuqua Valley, IL) (pictured left by Scott Bush) was diagnosed with mono Wednesday.  According to his coach, Derrick felt under the weather last Friday at his sectional championships, where he ran 8:58.88 for 3200m and 4:14.72 for 1600m.  Despite running such great times, Derrick continued to feel worn down throughout the weekend.  With Michael Fout (Sr., LaPorte, IN) out for the season with an injury and now Derrick with illness, Nike Outdoor Nationals will be missing two of its biggest stars.

Boys AA State Preview: Cahokia, ESL Once Again Lead the Way Scott Bush May 20, 2008

It's finally here.  The Illinois Boys State Track and Field Championship is finally upon us.  Despite windy, cold and wet conditions over the course of the outdoor season, the weather finally looks perfect just when it's needed most.  As the top athletes assemble in Charleston this coming weekend, speculation abounds over most of the events.  Will Dan Block throw 210 feet in the discus, can Kraig Appleton break the state record in the 300m hurdles and how about Chris Derrick having a shot to win both the 1600m and 3200m?  Those are the questions, add in nearly a dozen more, competitive fields all around and a tight team battle and we have the making of one of the best state track and field championships Illinois has ever seen.  Start getting excited and check out our AA state preview.

Fernandez (CA) Impresses Once Again: U.S.#1 1600m in 4:05.57 Scott Bush May 16, 2008

At the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships Thursday evening, Fernandez ran an impressive distance double. The Oklahoma State-bound senior won the 1600m run in a new U.S. #1 time of 4:05.57, running splits of 60, 61, 62, 62 according to The Modesto Bee. Fernandez also ran a great mark in the 3200m as well, winning and nearly lapping the entire field with a 9:00.10 victory. While news broke earlier in the week that Foot Locker champion Michael Fout (IN) will end his season due to injury, it seems like Fernandez has bounced back from his early season injury and is really rounding into shape. Foot Locker Champion Fout Ends Season Due to Injury Scott Bush May 15, 2008

Earlier this season we reported that Fout obtained a stress fracture during the indoor season and was taking his time getting back into top shape. Well, it seems that Fout's earlier injury healed, but according to the Tribune, "a case of severe tendonitis" is keeping him from training properly. He now looks to heal 100% and start preparing for his collegiate career at Florida State University. South Bend Tribune Article

Fernandez (CA) Returns to Championship Form Scott Bush May 08, 2008

https://il.milesplit.com/files/il/iltrack08/germanfernandezprofile.jpgAfter taking the entire month of April off from competition, distance star German Fernandez (Sr., Riverbank, CA) (pictured rightby Scott Bush) returned to competitive action Wednesday at the TVL Championships (CA). Fernandez broke three league records, winning the 800m dash in 1:55.59, 1600m in 4:14.03 and 3200m in 9:09.90. After competing in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March, Fernandez felt some discomfort in his achilles. After scratching from the 3200m start list at the Arcadia Invitational in early-April, the Oklahoma State-bound senior took precautionary measures to make sure he is ready for the various championship action over the coming two months.

Another week, another version of the Illinois Collegiate Running Database.  The performance of the weekend came from Evan Jager (Fr., Jacobs/Wisconsin) at the Stanford Invitational.  Jager ran in a stacked 1500m field, finishing in sixth with a new PR of 3:41.24.  See where all the other Illinois ex-high school runners stack up.

Bunch (IL) Launches Shot Put 51-00.75, U.S. #1 Scott Bush May 06, 2008

Daniella Bunch (Jr., Mahomet-Seymour, IL) had the goal of breaking the 50 foot barrier in the girls shot put all season long. On Monday evening Bunch did just that, winning the Corn Belt Conference Meet event with a new outdoor U.S. #1 throw of 51-00.75. According to one onlooker at the meet, Bunch's series of six throws were 49-00, foul, 50-00.50, 49-05, 51-00.75 and 49-09. This throw improves upon her PR of 49-05 thrown last month, while leaving the central Illinois junior only 2-03 off the junior class record of 53-03.75 set by Michelle Carter (TX) in 2002.
