Nike Cross Nationals: Let's Meet The Midwest Individual Boys

Conant Smith (Jr., Middleton HS; Middleton, OH)- The reason that you are surprised this kid's third place finish is because he shut down his season after the state meet last year. Smith indicated that a long campaign took a toll on his sophomore body and mind. 2017 so far has been awesome for Conant. He won his first six contests of the season and finished no lower than second to the great Dustin Horter through the OHSAA. Smith proved that his personal best 15:00 5k which he ran in mid-October was not a fluke when it came to qualifying for Portland. Smith got situated up front by the first mile and hung on to finish third behind Danny Kilrea and Horter. Ticket punched to Portland for the first time. Ohio has been strong on the boys side this season with as many as four nationally ranked at the high watermark. Smith certainly has an opportunity to be among the top 21 this weekend. He just needs to go and get it.
