Scouting Report: St. Teresa Girls

St. Teresa HS Girls

The reigning Class 1 champs come back looking strong as ever. They are not only the top ranked Class 1 school, but one of the best schools statewide. They did lose their top runner from last year, Ellen Devereux but her sister, Rachel, should help fill that role. Rachel is coming off of a strong sophomore campaign which found her 11th at the State Cross Country meet.  They started off their season this past weekend with a solid victory at the Metro East Lutheran Invitational where they won the meet over Rochester 45-60. They averaged 20:48 for the 5K course with Rachel Devereux leading the team with a time of 20:05.

Behind her will be a trio of girls. Ivy Handley, Megan Burgener, and Bree Tschosik finished 7-8-9 this weekend and should help St. Teresa continue their success this season. Handley, a senior, is coming off of an impressive track season where she ran 11:22 for 3200m and 5:20 for 1600m. Both of these are the top returning times for the team. Megan Burgener ran a 5:27 while sister Emily ran 11:52. With five girls returning at 12:05 or better for 3200m, this team looks great coming into the 2012 season.

The solid St. Teresa's team will be aided by a handful of freshman, Lauren Evelti, Kelsey Cleary and Ashton Jerger, that all could make impact, especially towards the end of the season as they gain more experience. Lauren Evelti had a strong showing this weekend winning the JV race in a time of 21:48, only a second behind her teams seventh runner in the varsity race.

Coach Vohland Says...

"Our team is a work in progress. We lost two really key runners and three other senior leaders so we need some others to step up. We are also dealing with injuries to two of our top five returning letterwinners,so it is going to be a team in transistion. We have a few freshmen who might be in it by the end of the year. Lauren Evelti, Kelsey Cleary and Ashton Jerger all show some promise."

"We don't have any home meets, but we believe our schedule is as good as any small school in the state. Hopefully we can put ourselves in a position to be in the trophy hunt come November."
