We take a look at the top freshmen in each event and provide some context to the rankings.
Mariyah Robinsonof Chicago Simeon has been one of the dominating sprinters of her class during the entire 2023 campaign. Robinson leads the young yearling sprinters in the 100 (12.35) and 200 (25.16). Both marks are wind-legal and
Robinson ranks 13th and 6th respectively overall. Robinson had already been seasoned with a successful indoor season that
produced two all-Illinois Top Times honors.
It was just a matter of time beforeMadalyn Marx of Mahomet-Seymour came out of her shell. She enjoyed a good indoor
campaign which saw her break 60 seconds in the 400m and earn several recognitions. Over the weekend, she
won the long dash at the Bloomington Invite in 57.29. It appears the top underclassman is ready to dip into the 56s pretty soon.
Chicago St. Ignatius'Annika Swancan make an ardent case as the best overall underclassman distance. She leads the charge
in the 800 (2:12.9), 2nd in the 3200 (10:49.11), and is third in the 400 (59.40); don't forget that Swan is one of the state's top 1600 runners, clocking a freshman indoor best 4:53.82 (#6 overall). Swan has not run a mile or 1600m
outside yet.
We cannot forget about the super-talented Daisha Brunsonout of Hoffman Estates (Conant). She took the scene by storm
with a second-place finish in the 200 and third in the 60H. The hurdles could make Brunson the star of the show
as it is currently. She rates first in the 100H (15.12).
Who is Zariah Burnett? Well before the track and field season, the 5'9" talented athlete was primarily showcasing her
talent on the basketball court for Rockford Guilford. Fortunately, the track and field coaching staff was able
to find her and put her in the high jump. The return on investment is worth its weight in gold. She has shown
promise in the long jump (16-10.75) and... now 5'6.25" in the high in only her second meet of the season! This mark
is IL#2 and the 9th-best freshman in the country. The potential to be great is like ooh and ahh!
We have another Ifft on the pole vault scene. Claudia Ifftwas born to do this just like her siblings and she has already cleared 12 feet indoors... and outside. The sky is the limit for one of the state's best who we are going to hear more about in the coming days, months, and years!
