There were slightly over 130 participants in the championship girls race for the Champs Sports Cross Country Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin- making it one of the leanest fields in meet history. Perhaps, the frequent sponsorship name change over the past few years may have played a part, nevertheless, the quality of entrants was at a premium.
Sophia Kennedy (Sr., Indy Park Tudor) boldly took the lead and held it for the first two miles in 5:31 and 11:09. But leave it up to Tatum David (Sr., Olney Richland County IL) to make a strategic move in the wooded area and emerge at the third checkpoint ahead of the field in 16:44. It would be a decisive victory by eight seconds over Kennedy in 17:16.
