Humboldt Park; Chicago IL

It's been several weeks since we've gotten some decent racing weather out here in the Windy City. And it's the first time away from the Lane Tech campus digs for some of the competitors entered to provide an indication of how competition can stack up amid clear blue skies in Humboldt Park.

The first race of the morning was the girl's varsity three-mile. 2A #2 Latin is no stranger to having top-ranked athletes. Ava Parekh, one of the top runners in the country, was ready to put on a show for the Romans. It took no more than two to three minutes into the race to realize how special of a runner Parekh is. She created a 30-second gap between her and her trailing teammates Marianne Mihas, Olivia Syftestad, and Bea Parr. The first two miles in 5:25 and 11:08 was a sign that this course was lightning fast.

Anywhere on the course, you looked, Parekh was all alone. She would have easily been mistaken for someone doing a solo time trial. Coming through the finish, Parekh ran a time of 16:43.8. This blazing time made her the state leader in the three-mile. Mihas was a little less than a minute behind her running 17:37.3. Overall, it was a dominating performance by the Romans who can legitimately make their case for the top spot in the upcoming rankings sweepstakes.

The next race of the day was the boy's varsity race. We saw a familiar face as our winner running in a league of his own. The opening race featured a flock of blue shirts from Taft, Whitney Young, and Latin. Lane Tech sprinkled the color pattern with myrtle and gold.

Ryan Hardiman of Latin followed by teammate Akili Parekh and Lucas Guidone of Taft were in the midst of the first mile in approximately 5:02-5:03. Amid the journey was a slew of runners under 5:10 and it appeared as if we could see some personal bests.

By the second mile, Guidone had the individual race under his control and Latin was doing the same in terms of the team race. Finally, it would be Guidone's strong surge that closed things out with a time of 15:12.4.

Latin took three of the first four finishers but had some issues closing things out and barely held off Whitney Young and Lane Tech by five points.

This upcoming week is supposed to produce sunny blue skies with temperatures in the 70s. This should lead to some great workouts which will undoubtedly have an impact on good performances next week. While athletes and coaches get back in the lab to tighten some things up, we'll be watching to see the best to come.
