Coming into the Mid-Suburban League Boys Championship, all eyes were on the 4x800. Two teams emerged from the pack in Barrington and Prospect. Both of these distance running powerhouses came in ranked among the elite corps in the state.
The opening legs burned a fast 1:55s which in turn enabled Barrington and Prospect to quickly separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Things really heated up on the anchor between Barrington senior Konrad Eiring and Prospect senior Greg Suarez. Powered by opening 53-second circuits, Eiring had the advantage of leading and taking chances to open up a gap and speed away from Suarez.
Suarez appeared to be spurred on by the raucous crowd, passed Eiring slightly inside the final 100m. However, Eiring was able to compose himself and bring home his team to victory in a then IL#1/US#4 7:43.51. Prospect's runner-up prize was a state in the second-fastest slot in the state at 7:44.19. Eiring and Suarez split 1:53.7 and 1:53.4 respectively.
