Mike Kuharic Invitational

Lyons Township High School Lyons Township, IL
Sep 7, 2019
Key Boys- #6 Lyons Twp, #8 Sandburg, #11 Downers Grove South, #17 Maine South; 2A: #2 Benet Academy
Key Girls- #13 Lyons
Race times: Girls- 9a, Boys- 9:30a
Outlook: Formerly called the Lyons Twp Invitational, the meet is named in honor of the late great Mike Kuharic whose Lion's teams were perennial powers and a threat to the York boys establishment. This meet which is held on school grounds at the south campus offers a flat layout and is mostly fan-friendly.

There is a solid group of boys teams that appears to be evenly matched. The winner should be between the hosts and Sandburg. Downers South, Maine South, and Benet Academy figure to be in the mix. The race to the finish line could be an interesting tale. Among the fleet of top aces are seniors Jared Kreis of Lincoln-Way Central and Guillermo Ibarra of Morton (Cicero). They will face an outstanding opponent in Gabriel Sanchez of Lowell, IN. Sanchez finished second to the state and Footlocker Champion Cole Hocker formerly of Indy Cathedral. If the race turns into a tactical affair, Sanchez's 1:51 800m speed can cover that as well.

The girls' teams are not nearly as deep as their counterparts but expect Lyons Twp to come out swinging and win their first invite with ease. Individually, Argo senior Abby Lopez is expected to challenge for the win. She is ready to do whatever it takes to get the victory. Junior Kate Dickman knows her home course well and should not give easily.

Chrisman Cowchip Classic

Chrisman-Scottland Jr. High Chrisman, IL
Sep 7, 2019
Key boys teams- Class A: #3 Urbana (University), #4 Monticello, #15 Arthur, #16 Paxton-Buckley-Loda, #17 St. Joe-Ogden, #22 Robinson, #24 Marshall
Key girls teams- Class A: #2 Tolono (Unity), #6 St. Joe-Ogden, #8 Monticello, #11 Urbana (University),
Outlook: This annual affair run on an actual "cow chip" farm should be a great one among Class A schools.  The boys ratings should see some big-time movement after the weekend as several good squads go head to head. It will be interesting to see how the packs of Urbana U High and Monticello unfold. Individually, Negus Bogard of Robinson is the big favorite.
The girls side will be as interesting in regard to the team battle. Unity is looking to separate itself among its peers with a big effort. SJO will not let them win without a strong battle. How good are Monticello and Urbana U High? This is an early-season test to find out. Monticello has an ace card in Mabry Bruhn. Pencil her as the favorite.

Key boys teams- #5 Hersey, Glenbard West, OPRF, Prospect
Key girls teams- #2 Downers Grove South, #7 OPRF, #8 Prospect, #15 Fremd, #16 Downers Grove North; 2A- #17 Vernon Hills, #18 Wheaton St. Francis
Outlook: It will be Hersey and Josh Methner all the way here... the girls field is a bit deeper. Look for DGS to win comfortably but it should be interesting how the teams behind them do. Aly Negovetich of Grant and Brenna Cohoon of DGS should battle it out for the win.

St. Charles East Leavey Invitational

Leroy Oaks Forest Preserve St. Charles, IL
Sep 7, 2019
Key boys teams- #2 St. Charles East, #7 Downers Grove North, #24 Batavia, #25 Waubonsie Valley; 2A- #2 Benet Academy
Key girls teams- #5 Batavia, #6 Barrington, #11 York, #21 Jacobs; 2A- #2 Benet Academy
A quality meet on both sides. The host Saints will begin their season as the boys hope to fend off DGN and others. Individually, let's go with Ian Geisler of Huntley for the win. The girls race for the gold plaque may be filled with fools good. This meet could be a prelude to the following week for several teams. If Barrington and Batavia hold out any runners for the FTTF in Peoria, look for Benet Academy to win. Katrina Schlenker of Batavia, Alice Abbott of St. Charles East, and Molly Fitzpatrick of Barrington are the big names if they compete.
