Two of the top five boys teams, and three of the top five girls teams, went head to head Friday night in Wheaton, IL. In the boys race, US ranked Naperville North lost to IL #5 Wheaton North 26-34 in a very close match-up that went man to man. If you look at the break down, Wheaton North beat Naperville North's guys man to man, which resulted in the big win for Wheaton North. Senior Chase Kadlec (Wheaton North) led the way for his squad, winning the overall conference title in 15:10, outleaning Naperville North's top guy Kyle Gibson (Sr.), who ran 15:11. From there, Wheaton North showed their strength of pack, producing an impressive 26 second split from 1-5. That type of split comes in hand during state series time, which starts next week in Illinois.
While the boys race proved to be an upset, the girls race went as planned. IL #3 Wheaton North took home the win, using some impressive front-running team tactics. Wheaton North teammates, Kelsey Tharnstrom (So.) and Jackie Laesch (Sr.) took 1-2 in 17:56 and 18:05 respectively over the three mile course. While IL #4 Naperville North took second with 42 points, to Wheaton North's 31, they ran great, putting their top four in the top nine. However, Wheaton North's top three finished in the top six, and their top six finished in the top 13. Wheaton North proved to be the team of the day, winning in impressive fashion on both varsity races.
