It is all smiles for Cary-Grove senior Morgan Schulz as she breezes at Wauconda Invite 3-mile course in 18:07 (Tony Jones photo)
Wauconda Invite
The Wauconda Invite wasn’t as strong as in the past but depth of Illinois cross country in the far Northwest Suburbs stepped up anyway. Cary-Grove senior Morgan Schulz showed that an all-state 300H/800m runner can compete with the best of them. Schulz used a 5:50 first mile to set up a dynamic second half race in which she pulled away late from Lakes junior Kortney Schardt to win by 10-seconds in 18:07.

Dustin Macuiba, a junior from Gurnee Warren, came into this meet as an unknown despite carrying a personal best 3200m of 9:39 from the track season. Macuiba toured the course with the leaders in 4:56 and 10:17 for the first two miles. Macuiba and Kyle Monahan (Sr., Barrington) scrapped for the next half-mile before the emerging standout from Great America pulled way to an comfy victory in 15:21.
