Musing of a High School Father: Happy Anniversary

The 12 team Trevian Invite took place this past Saturday. Jessica, running the 3,200 for the first time this abbreviated outdoor season is still fighting shin pain but was able to squeak out the win. Courtney experienced a minor muscle strain earlier in the week and sat the meet out. This ideal senior season is not on the projected path we would have hoped for in January. With three weeks left in the season we are all hoping to get back on track very quickly. On the other hand, Mimi Smith set a PR of 5:02 in the 1,600 to take the win.

The other NT distance girls are really starting to show their colors too. New Trier has 7 girls fighting for the coveted 4 spots of the 4 x 800. If coaches Spags and Burnside find the right combination these next couple weeks, a podium visit in Charleston is well within reach.

We have our Conference meet at Evanston is Thursday afternoon and hopefully my girls will be able to take part. It is a bittersweet week for Debbie and me. You see, we just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary and we leave for a brief out of town celebration on Wednesday. Shame on us for scheduling this get-away this week, but we are tying it into a work trip in California she has that only comes around every two years. Not only are we missing the CSL Conference meet, we are missing a choir performance for our son, Tyler; Prom pictures for our daughters and an opportunity to hear Courtney speak in Peoria at a conference for an award she won. Ugh! Why did our anniversary have to be this week? Lucky for us, my parents are able to come up from Peoria to fill in for us.

As you may have read in my blog last week (all 12 of you), we celebrated the 18th birthday of Court and Jess on the 21st. Rewind 18 years and we actually had the option of choosing their birthday for them. Debbie went full term in her pregnancy and the doctor talked with us about scheduling her inducement to deliver. Early in the week, she said, “Would you like Friday or Monday to deliver?” Since that Monday would have been our anniversary, we picked Friday so we wouldn’t share the day to celebrate.

Debbie, being the unmotivated, sloth-like individual dropped down to one class at Kellogg at night as she pursued her MBA during the semester of the twins birth…after working all day in the field of Private Equity. Yes, it was a fast paced time in our lives, and kids were not anywhere in the near-term picture, but God had other plans for us and decided we were ready to be parents. After the initial shock wore off that we were going to be parents many years (if ever) ahead of our schedule, we came to grips with this reality. During a routine ultrasound, the technician casually said, “You know it is twins, right?” If you look at my hand, you can still see the indentation from where Debbie squeezed it from the shock of that question. No, that was a surprise too.

Okay, twins it is. Since the delivery was scheduled, Debbie saw no reason not to attend class on Wednesday night at Kellogg. Friday; deliver full-term twins; Wednesday, go back to her MBA class. The guy she sat next to every week said, “You look different, did you get your hair cut?” No moron, I just delivered two babies would have been my reply. Instead she answered, “Nope.” Hopefully that guy is not running a large corporation at this point.

So, now you know why it is easy to remember my anniversary. Oh, and the fact that I engraved the date on the inside of my wedding band. Guys; sometimes we need a little extra help. Here’s to a great race on Thursday night, so we can get one step closer to enjoying that new blue track one last time in Charleston on May 18th.
