Imani Carothers and Clayton Mendez Are Two Of Chicago's Finest Paired Athletes



Carothers is one of the most decorated athletes in state history winning the 100H three straight years, multiple medals in the long jump, triple jump, and relays. Carothers, a University of Georgia signee, won the New Balance Outdoor Nationals Emerging Elite 100H title last June. As one of the top short hurdlers in the country, she is the 14th fastest returner at 13.72 (+1.8). The blistering mark is rated #1 all-time for a Class 2A athlete. Carothers is proficient in the jumps as well. In the triple jump, she leaped 42-10 to win the state title. Though the feat was wind-aided (+2.9) it still ranked #2 all-time in Illinois for all conditions and #3 returning mark overall in the country. Carothers has surpassed the 19-foot barrier numerous times. She won the 2016 state title and has a personal best of 19-9. Her indoor best 19-5 is among the best in state history.

Mendez has been described as the ultimate coach's athlete. The soon to be Stanford University Cardinal has learned to persevere through bad times and navigate himself to safe landings in the tough world of Illinois distance running. Mendez had a tough sophomore track and junior cross country seasons. It was the 2017 track season that things began to move skyward. Mendez ran an amazing 9:01 indoors and then dipped under 9:00 at 8:59.46. Both times rated in the top 5 in the state. Mendez completed the best cross country season by an CPL athlete when placed 2nd at state in a fast 14:22. He qualified for NXN (18th) and Footlocker Nationals (9th)- which he earned all-american honors.
