2016 Class 2A Boys Pre-Season Relays Preview

4x200m-

2015 State Champion: Cahokia 1:25.83

Outlook: Cahokia set another state all-time best in an event they are strong in but not considered as dominant in the other sprint categories. The Comanches seized control and put things away with Ja'mari Ward's second leg tote in becoming only the second team in Illinois history to break 1:26. Once again this is a program that thinks big. Look for something even bigger this year if the timing is right. We could see our first sub 1:25. This would surely put Cahokia in a place among the immortals nationwide. Third placer Hillcrest would be happy improving its stock from a year ago. The key guy is Tayjione Nathan (Sr.). He is expected to be a big player in the individual sprint game this season notably the 200m which would go hand and hand with the 4x2 relay. Watch out for Chicago schools Phillips and Urban Prep to be in the mix again after running 1:28.31 and 1:29.08 respectively. They were both state finalists last year. Montini ran in the finals but was disqualified for an infraction. They return three juniors to the fold.

 4x400m-

2015 State Champion: Cahokia 3:17.57

Outlook: This is probably Cahokia's best relay despite not producing a national worthy time. The Comanches are usually on cruise control by the time the showshopper arrives. Ja'mari Ward has led off many times and producing splits in the 46-second range. There is no doubt if pushed or threatened that we could see a mark in the 3:11-12 range. Coach Millsap if his team gets on a stage like New Balance Outdoor Nationals the fans will finally see how great his quartet can be. Senior Tyran Lyons is one of the most heralded anchors this state has seen being that he is so versatile. The Comanches have already broke the state indoor best with a sickening 3:18.99 in early January. It is a sign of what is to come when May and hopefully June will bring. There is no other team that has broken 3:20 last season but several units appear to be on track to maintaining their status. Rich Central, who placed third at state last year, return three legs and could add upstart Franklin Hunt (Sr.). Hunt is currently cutting his teeth in the 200 but could be added here if his strength is improved. Harrisburg has a deep history in performing well in this relay at the championship level, so it should not be a surprise to see the Bulldogs among the elite corps. They will remain intact this season with three returners back.
