Check out the epic Boys 600 meter national record race
==================
-------------------------------
It's time to return to the MileSplit time machine and pull up one of the most impressive indoor track and field feats. At the 2022 CYUP Misfits Invitational presented by HOKA, Will Sumner of Georgia made history in the 600-meter run.
Prior to the Misfits Invitational, the Sumner camp had expressed interest in their pupil wanting to break the indoor mark, which at the time was held by Strymar Livingston of the Bronx, New York. His time of 1:17.58 was run in 2012. It seemed a bit farfetched at the time, considering we all were easing out of the COVID-19 restrictions. Outstanding high school performances were not abundant, especially during the indoor season.
According to his uncle, Nick Zincone, Sumner had run some great workouts leading up to the VA Showcase, which took place a week before the Misfits.
Boom! Sumner took down Strymar's 500m record at the VA Showcase with a blistering time of 1:01.25, and the hype began for the national record attempt in Chicago.
Sumner got in a day early to survey and plot out how he would attack the race on the new Gately Indoor Stadium Track.
I remember covering the race. He opened so fast in the open circuit, in 24.48, that there was no way he could keep up that pace.
Sumner hit the 400 in 49.6 and seemed to accelerate more as he entered the backstretch one more time.
As he closed on the finish line, I went into full excitement mode, '1:12, 1:13, 1:14, 1:15..."
It was one of the most impressive feats I've witnessed in nearly 40 years in being a part of this great sport.
