MileSplit IL Summer Journey: Scout Storms Is Unleashed

The aftermath of Scout Storms and her first individual state championship in cross country last fall at Detweiller Park in Peoria

The incomparable Scout Storms has been a staple on the state scene since entering high school more than three years ago. The outstanding distance runner, now a senior at Barrington High School, Storms has earned numerous honors in cross country, including her first 3A state title in 2023.

Storms will aim to defend her crown this fall, and to do so, she embarked on a strong summer training program.

MileSplit Illinois was fortunate enough to obtain and share it with you all. Enjoy!

4-Week Summer Mileage Buildup-

Week 1-
June 24th
This is my first long run since my break! I ran with some of the girls at practice. We did seven miles at a moderate pace and finished with four strides. Then, we did our band series, core work, stretching, and yoga. I also went and got my sister and me new running shoes today!
Mileage total - 7 miles at 7:18

June 25th
We spent 40 minutes on the Arc Trainer as it was thundering during our practice time. We then did some core exercises, stretching, yoga, and our plank series, which most of us dread!

June 26th
I went for a 45-minute run with no pace on the watch. I probably ran about six miles and finished with stretching and yoga.

June 27th
This was the first "workout" of summer training. We warmed up for 30 minutes at a leisurely, moderate pace and then did 8x200 pickups with a 200-jog recovery. These were the fastest most of us had gone in a while, but they still felt pretty smooth. We finished with a 10-minute cooldown, core work, stretching, and yoga.
Mileage total - 7 miles

June 28th
I ran six miles at a leisurely 7:33 pace, one of our favorite routes today! I finished with a plank series, stretching, and yoga. In the afternoon, I also worked out for 25 minutes on the arc trainer at the gym.
Mileage total - 6 miles at 7:33

June 29th
Today, I went on a 6-mile easy run with the whole group, finishing with four strides, stretching, and yoga. I also went to the Chicago Cubs game today with my dad!

Mileage total - 8 miles at 7:27

July 2nd
2 mile time trial! We do this yearly at around the same point to see where we are with training and determine our paces for workouts in the summer and the season. I was thrilled with how mine went and how I felt throughout, especially considering I have just gotten back into training! I won't disclose the time right now, but our team looked really good, and this was a big confidence booster for most of us!!!
Mileage total - 5 miles at a range of paces

July 3rd
Effortless five-mile recovery run in the morning with the girls and 30 minutes on the arc trainer in the afternoon at the gym. Mileage total - 5 miles nice and slow + cross-train

July 4th
Today, we practiced a little earlier and tried to get everything in before we had to be in the parking lot to set up our float for the parade! We did our second (sort of) summer workout, which started with a 30-minute warmup run. We then did 6x400-meter pickups with a 400-meter jog between each one. These felt pretty good, although it was really hot and humid for that early in the morning! We finished with a 10-minute cooldown, stretching, and yoga.
Mileage total - 6 miles at a range of paces

July 5th
It was an easy 5.5-mile trip with the girls in the morning and 30 minutes on the arc trainer in the afternoon! We also did our plank series and leg exercises, which we had pushed from practice on the 4th, and finished with our stretching and yoga, of course!
Mileage total - 5.5 miles, nice and easy

July 6th
Off day! (I usually take Sundays off, but we drove down to Wingfoot running camp today)
Mileage total - 0

July 7th
I ran four miles at 7:39 avg with my camp group. It's nice to run with new people, and I'm looking forward to a week of fun with my team!
Mileage total - 4 miles at 7:39

Week total - 33.5 miles

Week 3-
July 8th
6.5 miles on a very tough, technical trail! I managed not to fall, which was my only goal for this run. The team only had two falls out of eight, a significant improvement from last year, haha! The scavenger hunt was so fun, and Abby won the plank contest!!!
Mileage total - 6.5 miles at 7:32.

July 9th
Seven miles on my favorite trail of the week. The boys pushed the pace the whole second half… we finished up with a 6:39 mile. It was scorching hot and humid, but it felt really good!
Mileage total - 7 miles at 7:02

July 10th
I walked seven miles on yet another challenging and hilly mountain trail, and once again, I managed no falls; woohoo!!! It was a cooler morning, which was nice.
Mileage total - 7 miles at 7:38

July 11th
Seven miles on a flatter trail, we pushed the pace a bit more and had a good progression, starting at 7:02 and working it down to 6:32!!! Our whole team matched and killed that twin Thursday outfit theme day.
Mileage total - 7 miles at 6:48

July 12th
It was graduation run day! It was the most astonishing run I have ever done. We ran a 5k starting at the bottom of a hill, up into a cave, and then the rest of the run through the cave! It was such an amazing experience.
Mileage total - 3.1 miles at an unknown pace (GPS was very much confused as we ran through the cave)

July 13th
Shakeout run back at home. I got home super late, so I ran in the afternoon, which I disliked doing in the summer!
Mileage total - 7 miles at 7:05

July 14th
Off day! Went on a long bike ride with some of the girls today.
Mileage total - 0

Back to a long run!!! Nine miles with Mia at a good pace. We ran our favorite long-run route and finished with six strides, bands, stretching, and yoga afterward!
Mileage total - 9 miles at 7:13

July 16th
30-minute moderate easy run, then 6x150m buildups, and a 10-minute cooldown. These are always fun with the team and music on a summer morning! It felt pretty good and smooth. Plank series, stretching, and yoga to finish off!
Mileage total - 7 miles at a range of paces

July 17th
Six miles nice and easy with the girls. Stretching and yoga after the run, went to Dairy Queen with some of my friends later in the day, yum!
Mileage total - 6 miles at 7:47

July 18th
Tempo day loading! A 10-minute warm-up, a 20-minute tempo, and a 10-minute cooldown. I accidentally forgot to turn 10 minutes into the tempo, so I went about 15 minutes out and got stuck, so I cooled down for a bit longer. Once I get locked into my pace, I tend to turn off my brain a bit. This was a good tempo.
Mileage total - 10.5 miles at a range of paces

July 19th
It was a very easy recovery run without pace on my watch. It was a good run with all of the girls on a nice, new route. I finished with four strides, a plank series, bands, stretching, and yoga!
Mileage total - 7 miles

July 20th
Six miles was easy to finish off the week. I got some new trainers, and I love running in them!!! I finished with stretching and yoga. Then, I went home and made my favorite banana oat pancakes!!!
Mileage total - 6 miles at 8:07

Weekly total: 45 miles!!! This was my big goal for the summer mileage progression, so I will likely not go over 45 for the rest of the summer.
