Martin Barco Runs IN #2 All-Time Mile at Trials of Miles

---

In a display of sheer determination and athletic prowess, Martin Barco catapulted himself into the annals of Indiana track and field history, claiming victory in the mile at the Trials of Miles event in New York. His remarkable performance not only secured the win against formidable competitors but also etched his name as the second-fastest Hoosier in the mile, clocking an impressive time of 4:02.94. Let's delve into Barco's phenomenal achievement and the thrilling race that left spectators in awe.

In a stacked race that included a sub 4-minute 1600m runner in Clay Shively, Canadien champion Robin Lefebvre, New Jersey state champion Peyton Shute, and many other standout runners, it was Barco who was the champion of the day.

It was a close race through the first three laps, and with 400 meters left, Shiveley was first in 3:03.82 and Barco second in 3:04.12. The two pulled away from Reilly on the back stretch before Barco slingshot out of the final turn and built a seven-meter lead in a span of 100 meters, finishing the last 400 in 58.82.

On top of ranking #2 in the outdoor mile, Barco ranks #1 in the indoor mile after running a time of 4:05.62 earlier this season, beating the previous record of 4:06.48 set by Cameron Todd in March of 2023 according to our database.

With another 1-2 months left in his senior season, Barco will have ample chances to break the Indiana state outdoor record. His current performance at the Trials of Miles indicates that he is in peak form, and with the right conditions and competition, he could potentially rewrite the record books. Barco has previously mentioned that a large goal of his is to become the first Indiana high schooler under the 4 minute barrier.
