Throwers of several throwing events will be on display at the New Balance Outdoor Nats and Nike Outdoor Championships.
Field events oftentimes get ignored at track & field meets even though they are a part of the sport. Events such as the shot put and discus throw in many instances are conducted outside of the stadium or school property, making it difficult for fans to follow.
Recently two of the state's top throwers seniors Alice Mihas of Chicago Latin and Javaris Ambrose of Harvey (Thornton) put their workout ethic on display in a recent workout at Lane Tech High School.
Mihas took second in the 2A discus throw at the state championship. Her personal best is... she rates better in the hammer throw, ranking eighth in the nation with a sizzling 160-8.75. Mihas will join one of the deepest throwing squads at Harvard University.
Ambrose has excelled in the HT despite being a novice in the event- whipping the ball and chain 219-4.75 for US#5. He threw the shot put 61-2 and took third at the state championship. The future U of Illinois student-athlete is looking forward to throwing in college.
