Illinois is one of the few states that doesn't recognize 5000 meters as its official high school distance. Three miles is the officially accepted distance even though many races range from 2.0 miles to 5K.
Whenever our state runners compete in the 5K, they perform very well. This year is no
exception. Keep in mind there are a select few opportunities to get in fast times and it's usually at an out-of-state invitational or during the post-IHSA season.
The Prairie State had one sub-15:00 performer this year but collectively there were some gems that presented themselves well. For example, three teams advanced to the Team Cross Nationals for the first time in Midwest history. Hinsdale Central (8th), Downers Grove North (10th), and Plainfield South (13th) performed well.
