The Future Of Distance Running Is Bright At IESA State Meet

The flurry of runners blitzed moments after the official's pistol sent them on their way

Maxwell Park once again served as the scene for well over 800 runners at the Illinois Elementary State Association (IESA) Cross Country Championship. Exciting two-mile races were held in the same fashion as its high school counterpart (IHSA)- three class gender races taking place once each hour. However, there is a difference in how the sequence of races is conducted as they are not in a linear order.

Girls: 8th grader Brea Counihan (New Lenox Martino) breezed to her first individual title in 11:44 over Mia Sirois (Barrington Prarie) who ran 11:53. Glenwood Middle School won another title, this time by scoring 63 points.

Boys: 8th grader Landon Harris (Granite City Coolidge) won his first title and dropped the fastest time of the day across all classes in 10:27. Glenwood Middle School matched their girls with a team title, scoring 126 points.

1A-
Girls: 7th grader Mya Hill (Brimfield) upset 8th grader Isabella Keller (Effingham Sacred Heart) by pulling way inside the final mile to win 11:50-11:58. Brimfield won the team title with 51 points.

Boys: 8th grader Maxwell Kirby (Morton Blessed Sacrament) repeats as champion with a decisive win in 10:29, the second fastest of the day in terms of a merge. Kirby's team was also victorious over Peru (St. Jude) 98-106.

Girls: In the closest race of the day, 8th grader Dusti Smith (Stark County) prevailed over 6th grader Berrit Shure (Chicago St. Bens) 12:00-12:01. St. Ben's wins yet another title 128-130 over Channahon.

Boys: 8th grader Zack Born (Metamora) out-sprinted fellow 8th grader Lucas Hollinshead (Williamsville) to the finish line 10:37-10:39 in the most tactical race of the day. Lagrange Gurrie defeated Roosevelt of River Forest 103-105
