Opening thoughts: It's been a long time coming but one of the human architects of the Gately Track & Field Stadium will be honored in a namesake invitational on Saturday. Dr. Worrill was a college professor as well as a civil rights leader and organizer. He was also an avid track and field fan who pursued a lifelong dream of bringing a world-class indoor facility to the city of Chicago. After decades of fighting through city politics, the dream became a reality in 2021.
What to watch for: This is the season opener essentially for the state of Illinois in terms of a team format. However, there have been teams with select individuals who have run on a club or in unattached meets at Gately and other venues.
Girls-
Evanston, Chicago Kenwood, Chicago Whitney Young, Chicago Brooks, Bloom Township, Chicago Payton, Chicago Southshore, and Mundelein are some key teams to watch.
Jordyn Miller (Mundelein) has been one of the top middle-distance runners this indoor season. She is entered in the 1600m with a seed time of 5:07.
Symone Frison (Lindblom) and Lindsey Miller (Simeon) will duel in the 60m. Both girls have been atop the CPS sprint food chain for several years. This also could be a peek into the CPS indoor championship next month.
Boys-
Chicago Depaul Prep, Chicago Payton, Chicago Whitney Young, Bloom Township, Chicago Taft, Chicago St. Rita
All-State football Kaleb Brown of St. Rita is listed to compete in the 60m and possibly a relay. Brown, an Ohio State U signee, has had success in the past on the track. His personal best 7.01 was a state freshman best. St. Rita's relays may also debut Wayne Conley who has shown promise in preseason club meets, and EJ Nwagwu, one of the top 200m returners in Illinois.
