3A Girls Sprints Preview: The Shelf Is Stocked With Talent

Cinnamon is one of the pre-eminent one-lap specialists in Illinois annals

400m-
2018 State Champion: Dajour Miles (Sr., West Aurora) 54.72
Key Athletes: Miles, Alexis Knight (Sr., Wheeling), Janii Jenkins (Sr., Gurnee (Warren), Ashanti Denton (Jr., Flossmoor-Homewood), Jessica Coughlin (Jr., Belleville West), Taylor Wright (Sr., Frankfort [Lincoln-Way East]), Ta'jae Jackson (Jr., Bolingbrook), Zakiya Johnson (Sr., Chicago Kenwood), Alana Berry (Jr., Chicago Whitney Young), Mikenna Robinson (Sr., Naperville [Neuqua Valley]), Angela Dugalic (Jr., Des Plaines [Maine West])
Outlook: Cinnamon Miles has built her legacy in this event with two state titles and a truckload of All-American honors throughout the years. Track fans are going to remember her for her nickname along in years to come. But in order to stand the test of time, certain items must be accomplished. Like it or not, another state title, a national level award would be splendid, and of course time. Miles has been hampered by several issues throughout her high school career, most notably is that nagging hamstring or lower leg pain. It has arguably stopped her from dropping 52-second bombs on the competition and leaderboards. Hopefully, we all will get one last sweet treat from the one that we call "Cinnamon."

Janii Jenkins is a name that stormed on the scene late last year when she took fourth. Jenkins continued to roar through the summer season running a personal best 55.02 making her the #2 returner in all of Illinois. She along with Alexis Knight appear to be formidable challengers in a strong chase group.

Taylor Wright was an all-state performer with tremendous talent still left on the table.

Ashanti Denton is an emerging long sprinter who is a year away from being on the national stage in this event.

Jessica Coughlin earned her first individual state medal last spring and will be a key figure for her team's fight to win a team title.
