Class 2A Girls Relays Preview: New Faces Are Ready To Shine

Maysha Vickers brings home the state championship gold medal for the Flyerettes

4x400-
2018 State Champion: E. St. Louis Sr. 3:53.26
Key teams: ESL, Mattoon, Carbondale, Mahomet-Seymour, Rock Falls, Burlington Central, Eureka, Chicago Lindblom
Season outlook analysis: As great as Dunlap performed in the relays a year ago, it should have been noted prior to the "showstopper," that E. St. Louis Sr. was the team lurking in the background. The Flyerettes are a storied program with the most success in mile relays whether it's in the regular season or primetime. It was proven one last time on the "Big Blue" track in Charleston as the ladies from the Eastside slid out of town with four gold medals. Dunlap finished second and will ride the 3A wave in 2019.
So the question is who besides ESL will be a team that will interest the faithful? Mattoon ran 4:00.95 last and return three legs including senior all-stater Summerlyn Smith who is one of the top 400m speedsters in the state. Mahomet-Seymour lost hurdle star Jessica Franklin but returns three legs from a sixth-place finish. Carbondale ran under 4:00 last year and with a majority of their personal returning, they will be another team in the deep south to watch for.
