Bartlett IL

The Chicagoland area finally received great weather in the form of fall on this first fall weekend of the season.  So the outcome satisfactory performances and fast times. One of the premier races this weekend took place at Sunrise Park as several of the areas best runners dueled.

The girl's race was definitely the show stopper as three of the state's top distance girls collied: Katrina Schlenker of Batavia, Katherine Olsen of Dekalb, and Mia Gianfrancesco of Batavia. From the gun, the emerging star freshman Schlenker controlled the race. At the first mile, she had a seven second lead on the field in 5:30. Olsen, running on an island, held a 10-second margin on Rachel Price of St. Charles North and Gianfrancesco. Schlenker continued to widen the deficit through two miles in 11:19. Ultimately, the win in a fast 17:04- 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up Olsen. Gianfrancesco grabbed third ahead of Price.

#6 Batavia was the heavy favorite and won easily with a score of 37 points. All five scorers placed inside of the top 15. Jacobs was a distant second notching 97 points.

The boy's side of the ledger was a stark contrast to the girls. #3 St. Charles East held out their top seven runners to provide them with welcomed relief as a result of some tough racing recently. This was supposed to be an opportunity for #12 Batavia to come in and grab an easy win. It was for not as unranked Dekalb came in for the steal. The Barbs slid past Batavia 52-55 on the strength of upfront pack running. Emmanuel Yepiz, Jacob Trapp, and Aidan Donohue ran down their opponents inside of the final quarter-mile.

The win went to Jared Kreis of Lincoln-Way Central in 15:09. The win was set up nicely as Kreis and Batavia's Adam Kennedy took the first mile out in 5:01. Kennedy would soon fade and later overtaken by Jesus Nava of East Aurora who later finished second. All-stater Zach Albrecht of Jacobs ran his first race of the season taking 10th.
