2018 Class A Boys Pre-Season Field Events Preview

Pole Vault
2017 State Champion: Cameron Witts ( Williamsville) 14-09.00
Key Returners: Witts, Zane Steele (Vandalia), Blake Hubbard (Carlinville), Jake Mennen (Oregon), Cole Sumner (Lawrenceville), Tim Moore (Altamont)
Season Outlook: Last season the pre-meet favorite was Curtis Gordon of Vandalia. How could the defending state champion and indoor prized champion not be? It was a slam dunk correct after vaulting 16-feet and on his way to stardom and the University of Illinois to continue his career. But make way for  Cameron Witts who began to emerge late in the 2017 indoor campaign with a career performance at the Charleston Invitational. He ended the undercover season with a second place finish at the Top Times. Though Witts would only clear 14-9 he was able to dethrone Gordon for the state title. Witts comes into the 2018 season as the marked man and will seek to improve mightily. This early in the season, Witts is the clear favorite to take home the 2018 Pole Vault State Title this May in Charleston. Other names that could compete with Witts this May are Returning 2017 All-Staters, Zane Steele (8th) and Cole Sumner (9th). Cole Sumner just finished his 3rd season of XC, he qualified for 1A State taking 122nd with a time of 16:51 which shows athleticism.

Expect Connor Artman to go unchallenged here and one of the best in the state overall (Tony Holler photo)

Long Jump-
2017 State Champion: Connor Artman (Carthage Illini West) 23-05.00
Key Returners: Artman, Jonathan Muller (Paxton-Buckley-Loda), Tate Walcott (Ridgeview), Brady Webb (Polo), Ben Buresh (Wethersfield), Colton Polhemus (Tremont), Jacardia Wright (Decatur St. Teresa), Mitchell Morrow (Blue Ridge), Luca Gualdoni (Johnson City), James Gwartney (Pittsfield), Zachary Olenek (St. Edwards), Caleb Bleich (Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley)
Season Outlook: Defending state champion Connor Artman is back for more this year. His off season training with some great coaches in the Chicago land area will be something to behold in time. If all indications come true, we are going to witness greatness. The future Notre Dame Irish Artman career best  PR to date is 23-05.00. It is safe to say that we all be looking for 24-feet with improved speed and power that's necessary to a national baller.
The next best returning  is Jonathan Muller's 22-05.00. He is ready to make serious gains Artman has an entire foot on his competition this year. The long jump scene will be competitive with the returning all-staters, Ben Buresh (3rd), Brady Webb (5th), Luca Gualdoni (6th), James Gwartney (7th), Mitchell Morrow (8th), and Caleb Bleich (9th). There will be more than a handful of 23-footers at season's end.

2017 State Champion: Nathan Kiger (Palestine) 6-07.00

Key Returners: Tristen Tewes (Pleasant Plains), Cameron Getz (Meridian), Devin Yocum (Bushnell-Prairie City), Tyson Magee (Cumberland), Bryce Heatherton (Athens), Joseph Wooten (Madison), Vidal Cargo (Leo), Kobe Wells (Arthur Lovington)

Season Outlook: This is going to be a close one between Tristen Tewes, Cameron Getz, and Devin Yocum. Tewes took 5th last year, Getz took 6th last year at Charleston last year, and Yocum took 7th. It will be a great battle between those three but, you cant count out Returning All-Staters, Vidal Cargo (8th)  and Kobe Wells (8th)

Key Returners: Andy Bird (Warsaw), Hunter Woodard (Tuscola), Jackson Sheckler (Illini Bluffs), Peyton Taylor (Mt. Pulaski), Payton Taylor (Catlin)

Season Outlook: This event is going to be hurting due to continued depletion of depth. It appears as though Andy Bird will be the go to guy after taking 2nd at Charleston last year. His biggest competition will be Hunter Woodard. Woodard took 4th last year at Charleston. Returning with Bird and Woodard is returning all-stater, Jackson Sheckler (7th).

Discus Throw-

2017 State Champion: Ty Kinkelaar (Effington St. Anthony) 164-06.00

Key Returns: Hunter Woodard (Tuscola), Peyton Taylor (Mt. Pulaski), Andy Bird (Warsaw), Nate Brown (Altamont), Jackson Sheckler (Illini Bluffs), Daniel Card (Carlinville), Brad Olysav (Williamsville), Payton Taylor (Catlin)

Season Outlook: Nate Brown is the best state meet returner but, the true favorite is Hunter Woodard if he choices to do Discus this year. Last year Woodard qualified for State year for the Discus throw but, chose to defer the event. Multiple all-staters are returning this year. Nate Brown (6th), Andy Bird (7th), Jackson Sheckler (8th), and Daniel Card (9th) are all Returning All-Staters from last year.  Card is the younger brother of the best discus thrower in IHSA girls history Kelsey Card.
