Introducing ... Ellen Chapman

Affectionately called “Big Bird” by her team mates, Glenbrook South’s star high jumper Ellen Chapman is a vital part of not only her school’s volleyball team, but the schools track team as well. As a freshman last year, Chapman placed 2nd at the state track meet with a jump of 5’5”. The 6’4” sophomore has already made an immediate impact on the Titans

What a pleasure to introduce you to this rising star that as a sophomore has already been offered scholarships to college! She made a verbal commitment in January to attend the University of Wisconsin on a volleyball scholarship after taking visits to Penn State and Illinois also. Talented in multiple sports, Chapman would probably have also had the opportunity for track scholarships as well.

With her first love being volleyball, it is no stretch to imagine that Keri Walsh (beach volleyball) is her favorite professional athlete. One of the things Chapman enjoys about track vs. volleyball is that while both are team sports, her high jump is an individual event and “you have to rely on yourself and work harder to be successful” says Chapman. She enjoys eating sandwiches and oranges and lots of water before a meet.

From a close family, she states that her parents have been the most influential people in her life growing up. “Dad just doesn’t give up” states Chapman. “He works really hard to achieve his goals”. Seems that has rubbed off on his daughter! ”My mom is also a very hard worker” and “makes things happen no matter what … she always finds a way to o get things done” states Chapman with a smile. With her parents helping her achieve her goals, Ellen has a few more goals that she wants to achieve this year. While happy to be a state medalist last year, she was very nervous as a freshman during competition. She hopes to jump 5’9” this year. She also hopes not to “dive under the bar” this year, she says with a little smile. We look forward to seeing this outstanding athlete compete this year.
