Katelynne Hart battled throughout the race in Seattle (Alan Vershaw photo)
Renton, WA-
Cool temperatures in the 60's pre-dominated meet talk at the Brooks PR Invitational held at Shoreline High School. Three Illinois lads ventured into new territory over the weekend. Although the final results indicate less than what they wanted to run, they should be commended on a wonderful season.
The first race of the day was the girls two-mile which featured the top girls in the country including Brie Oakley (Grandview, CO) and Claudia Lane (Maribu, CA). The two titans set an impressive early pace that left the rest of the field in its wake. The first mile was incredibly fast in approximately 4:55. Glenbard West freshman Katelynne Hart tried to hang on in 4:57 but was eventually worn down and finished an exhausting 6th place in 10:19.29. She would finish the year as the #2 freshman in the country behind third placer London Culbreath (Mckinney, TX). However, it was all U of California bound Oakley who got the final say as well as the meet record and second fastest ever clocking for 2miles behind Mary Cain (New York).

The 100m was run into a strong headwind otherwise the winning time would have been much faster. Regardless, it was an impressive showing by a fleet of America's best sprinters. Isaiah Cunningham (Rancho Verde, CA) nipped pre-meet hype Chauncy Smart (Auburndale, FL) for the title. Freshman standout Marcellus Moore of Plainfield North maybe feeling the remnents of a long season that began in January. He finished 7th in 10.87.

The final race of the day was what everyone was waiting for. The idea of anyone much less a trio breaking the magical 4:00 barrier in the mile would be tough. Sam Worley (Texas), Cooper Teare (California), and Casey Clinger (Utah) were among the elite entries looking to make the breakthrough. The first two check points were right on time as 58, and 1:58 were recorded. But a slowdown on the third lap did the field in. Despite a strong finish by Worley he came up short and settled for a very solid 4:02.04. Jack Aho (Grayslake North) did not get a great start and had to play catch up. He still ran 4:09.58 to place 10th.
