The overall number #1 team in the state is Glenbard West. The Lady Hilltoppers proved they have an outstanding 1-2 punch that is on its way to becoming one of the best in state history with Katelynne Hart (Fr.) and Lindsey Payne (Jr.). Unless something changes between now and the state championship they will be virtually unstoppable. On Saturday, they used a modest approach in the early beginning to deal with supposed sloppy course conditions. Payne and Hart sat in the middle of the pack for the first half mile of the race before moving to the front of the fray with authority. They passed through the first mile in 5:40. By the halfway point the duo hit mark in 8:37. It was all but over at two miles in 11:30-31. The rest of the pack was over 20 seconds back. The final result saw Hart use her tremendous closing speed (2:13 800m PB) to move past Payne in the final quarter-mile to win by two seconds in 17:06... the upstart Olivia Niziolek (Jr., Maine South) won the pack battle to beat 10 other girls who broke 18:00.

Katelynne Hart and Lindsey Payne post-race interview

  • Glenbard easily won the title of course. Not a surprise. What was a surprise coming in was Wheaton-Warrenville South. Coach Rob Harvey's team was just barely in the Flo 50 Saucony rankings. Harvey does not like to talk about his team much this early in the season. Well after a real good hard fought battle to snag second, Harvey was all smiles. Coach Harvey and his team whistled away with the runner up trophy. Four runners in the top 40 helped of course, but it was the upfront running by seniors Allison McGrath and Sara Atkins placed 10th and 12th overall.

  • Palatine may be on their way to being the usual dominant cross country team in the ranks. The Lady Pirates slipped past #5 Geneva for 3rd. Coach Joe Parks was working the sidelines cheering on his troops which propelled them to strong finishes. Neuqua Valley and Maine South  continue to run well. Both teams will be vying for a top 5-7 finish in the state championship
