DGS Highlights: Record Breaking Night

It was a record breaking evening in Naperville at the Al B. Carius Track located on the campus of North Central College.  Here are some of the key highlights from the evening (note: full recap coming Tuesday afternoon).

Boys-

  • 4x800m: Lane Tech broke the meet record in a blazing time of 7:54.21- good for IL#1/US#13. The Indians held off a determined and hard charging Downers Grove North quartet who also broke the old meet record with a time of 7:55.87. Lane's splits were 1:56.5, 1:58.8, 2:03.9, 1:55.2.  Lyons was third in 8:01.44. 9 teams broke 8:10 in championship section.

 

  • 4x200m: Chicago Bloom Twp. were on their way to a victory when they inexplicably ran out of the exchange zone on the anchor leg and was disqualified. Plainfield East took advantage of the follie and won in a season best 1:31.29.  Lyons Twp. finished second overall from section #3 in 1:32.85. Minooka placed fourth in 1:33.18.

 

  • 4x400m: Lane Tech set the stage in section 4 with a season best 3:29.25 to barely hold off Naperville Central who clocked 3:29.25. Minooka dropped the time to beat by winning section 5 in 3:27.59.  Finally, it was the championship race that produced the most dividends. Neuqua Valley withstood a come from behind attempt from Lyons Twp. to take the gold medal in 3:25.03-3:25.05.

 

Downers Grove North's Stephanie Urbancik

Girls-

  • 4x800m: Downers Grove North needed a strong last two legs to win the championship in 9:24.48. The Trojans regained the state best after previously losing it to Naperville Central. Loyola Academy stormed from the dead midway in the pack to place second in 9:28.98. 17 teams broke 10:00. Coming into the meet there were only 9 teams that were under the watermark.

 

  • 4x200m: Lincoln-Way East established a new meet record and state best for the second year in a row on the strength of good stick play and flawless transitions.  The Griffins were mired in a dog fight with Homewood-Flossmoor for three legs before senior Alexis Hyshaw pulled away to a victory in 1:41.36. Homewood-Flossmoor clocked 1:43.86

 

  • 4x400m: St. Charles East ran away with the victory without one of their horses junior Elizabeth Chmelik. The Saints easily won over Minooka 4:01.92-4:05.72. Lincoln-Way East pulled out several of their guns but was still able to muster a solid 4:05.99.
